The Jets always win the offseason, whether it's because they picked up Brett Favre, drafted a first-round quarterback, gained recognition through the ravings of their colorful coach, or lured HBO's Hard Knocks to their training camp. But once the real games start, they clearly become the second team in New York. Now, after their appearance in the AFC championship game last year, the question George Willis put to Giants running back Brandon Jacobs yesterday was, have the Jets overtaken the Giants as the area's No. 1 team?
Here's Jacobs' answer.
Now I ask you. Let's assume the Jets indeed win themselves a Super Bowl in the next season or two. Can they ever get enough support to be considered the premier franchise in this area?
All opinions welcome.

Ern,they didn't even get it during Joe Willie's tenure ... no way they get in the next hundred ... but I sure wish motor mouth Jacobs would shut the frig up ... the guy has done very little these last years except to take Barber's place as Mr. irrelavent orator ...
ReplyDeleteBoth teams have a lot to prove this year, enough said. It's good that Hubris and BS are alive on both teams.
ReplyDeleteGiants have always traditionally and longevity wise been "New York's Football Team". I have been with the Giants since 1956 and grew up with them in the very dismal late 60s through 70s decline. The Jets were exciting in the Joe Willie era and I even had their Season tickets for two years as getting them for the Giants was a de facto "never". What's wrong with enjoying both teams (different leagues) during the season (as greater NY-NJ fans) and then cheering only the Gmen when they might go head to head? Rex does remind me of his Dad...even a little of Parcells....Cool
The wannabe never supplants the original. Ask the Mets, Nets, and Islanders. The Jets will never be more important and more beloved than the Giants just like Nassau County will never be Manhattan. Which team has sold almost all it's PSLs (less than 1500 left) and which team has over 15,000 still available? The marketplace has already answered your question, Ern.
ReplyDeleteThe Giants are New York's team. That being said the Jets are a very popular team in the whole New York sports lexicon and can certainly make in roads with a successful run over the next few years. New Yorkers love pro football and there is room for two teams.
ReplyDeleteNo. No way. I love this talk out of Jacobs - it's true, the Jets fans know it, and that's that.
ReplyDeleteOnly if the Giants move to LA, Okl, Nevada, Salt Lake city or somehwere else stupid and insane, will the New York Jets be #1 in the tri state area.
ReplyDeleteEnough with this Jets malarky already, how about some Ray Handley memories for offseason guffaws and knee slaps.
Let's put it this way. There are 9 professional teams in the NY/NJ area. I would say in "FAN SUPPORT" alone the Jets rank behind the Yankees, Giants, Mets, Rangers and even the awful Knicks. They rank ahead of only the Devils, Nets & Islanders. Jacobs is right, but could he please keep his mouth shut and just stay on the field this season and average more than 3.5!!
ReplyDeleteNo. The Giants will always be #1 in the NY area. Besides, the Jets aren't winning any Superbowls any time soon... I don't think they have the offense to pull it off.
ReplyDeletecan we get any comments on the OTAs and who was lined up where?
ReplyDeletePatti T tells about Beckum being used as slot receiver and his comments are that he does not do the same things as Boss, so he doesn't get the reps in Boss' absence. It also means that whenever he's in the game its a wrinkle.
ReplyDeleteLB: Boley, Goff, Sintim.
Barden; 50/50 good
player to watch: Tim Brown from Rutgers
Who cares? Let both teams have their due. It doesn't matter. I'm quite sure the players don't care, despite Jacobs' comments. He just answers questions that are asked of him. But I agree with the previous comment - talk is cheap, just play.
ReplyDelete...C'mon man!
ReplyDeleteGo GIANTS!!!
