Poll Time!

Seems like a good time to run a poll, especially now that the heat has been turned up on the defense.

Take a look to the left and you'll see our latest, which asks what Tom Coughlin should do with defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan. Vote, and then explain yourself right here. We'll leave it up until Monday so you have the time to formulate a well thought out answer.

Remember, vote early, vote often.

  1. I'm going further than you asked. A complete overhaul is what I want. I say that because the only way to get rid of the OC & DC is to purge themselves of Coughlin. This team quit.
The Giants were doomed right after they won in OT last Sunday. Why you say? Because I read the next morning that John Mara is upset that his team has to travel 2000 miles in a short week and play Denver who was already home the previous week. Yeah, he is right...but Mr. Mara, I blame you. You and your fellow NFL owners wanted a network to grow your sport. Great...good business decision. ( btw, it could have been a home game, but you did not want to inconvenience your fan base on Thanksgiving, so don't cry me a river now ) Yes, more revenue streams but at what cost? The same owners who will sign off soon on an 18 game schedule. "a subject for another day" Lets get to the coordinators. I'm going to start with Sheridan. He is not a people person. That is why he wanted to go back up in the booth. Coughlin orders him on the field. Another bad decision by TC. His schemes are flawed and his players do not understand or comprehend what he wants. That is why Osi left camp. Have you ever seen so many receivers running free in the secondary? The DB's look like chickens running around with their heads cut off. It is like we play with only 10 on defense. Or zone blitzes where your best rushers are dropping into coverage. Lunacy! As far as Kevin Gilbride or "Killdrive" is concerned he is way to predictable. I can see on TV what they are going to run. Why does he continually have Eli in shotgun? You can't run "play action" from there. Good coaching is about deception. I see none from him. I've always felt we won in spite of him. Remember, outside of Spagnuolo, Coughlin's record of hiring coordinators is very poor. (John Huffnagel, Tim Lewis) I don't think he deserves to hire another. But the hallmark of good Giants teams was their defense. This team is not physical or tough enough. I always remember Sam Huff running off the field and shouting to the offense..."Just hold'em" Or LT imploring his team to go out like a bunch of crazed dogs. Parcells would never stand for this. he'd cut someone just to make an example or light a fire under his squad. Coughlin has become complacent and not wanting to throw someone under the bus. He has become soft, a little of the "old" Coughlin would be better here. People have to be accountable. that goes for players, coaches, front office & owners. On a last note, it is time for the fans to revive the "Goodbye Allie" chants (Coughlin) once again....Maybe fly a plane over the new stadium.Mr.Mara...if you learned one thing from your dad it should have been this. Listen to your customers, if they are unhappy, try to appease them and fix it. If not you will lose all credibility with them. Please John Mara pay heed as to what your father believed. It will serve you well.

  2. Right on Mitch. But since the FAA now frowns on such stuff flying a plane over Giants Stadium with a sign "5 WEEKS OF LOUSY FOOTBALL IS ENOUGH" it would probaly get the job down if fans showed up for the Dallas game with NY Gaints (get it!) brown bags over their heads. I mean this team hasn't won a Super Bowl in a season and a half. Heck they only made the playoffs four years running! Off with their heads!!

  3. Kevin - The point, which you so clearly ignored, is that this team has more talent than the Detroit Lions therefore should not be playing worse than the Detroit Lions. Add on to that the PSLs fans have been asked to pay to finance the new stadium (which really doesn't seem to be THAT much of a leap forward from the old stadium given the money spent), Eli's new contract, and the spending on free agents that have contributed little, and one could reasonably assume that Giants fans have the right to be, at minimum, annoyed. If they were playing their hearts out and just barely losing, I imagine most fans would be somewhat understanding. But when you see a collapse like the Denver game and most players appearing to be apathetic about it (Yeah, Osi yelled. Look at HIS stat line from that game!), it tends to upset fans. Just looking some indication of genuine effort and competence.

  4. Thank you dweez115...
I had to vent. I have read other Giants blogs and the fans seem to be more passionate then they are here. Football is a sport where not only injuries take their toll, but you always have to be thinking about the future. Jerry Reese has done a very good job in my opinion. The mistake made was that after we collapsed last year, everyone believed (including myself) that it was due to the Plaxico incident. We did not forsee an aging OL or a weak, weak set of Linebackers. We used to be known as "Linebacker U" This team was getting old before our eyes and we ALL overlooked it. I looked back and was surprised to find this fact. 1991 was the last time we took a LB as a #2 ( Kanavis Mcghee ) until this past draft (Sintim) We have to all the way back to 1984 to find a #1 (Carl Banks) When is the last time you saw a Giants LB bury a running back behind the line of scrimmage like Ray Lewis shooting the gap on Sproles for a loss and ends the Ravens/Chargers game?

  5. Ernie I saw you on Giants Gameday last night and you made the point about about the defense allowing 2 long drives and then Bob Papa said it was followed by "two three & outs." That is the problem right there...O-Line, DT's, LB's & Safeties. PERIOD!

  6. Mitch - I hear you. I grew up watching the Giants of the 70s. While a lot of kids would ride the bandwagon and wear Steelers or Cowboys jackets, I took the verbal abuse and proudly wore my Giants jacket. You knew they were awful and you knew they would lose. I remember sitting on the couch with my dad watching the Philly - NY game, NY leading with seconds to go and my dad, another life long fan, said, "watch the Giants blow this.". A second later, "The Fumble" became part of NY's legacy. But back then, they had the excuse of being truly awful with vert little talent. I used to feel awful that Harry Carson, who always gave it his all, was stuck on such a bad team. There's no excuse for the current team to play this way. I agree that a lot positions got old fast, but that doesn't excuse the lack of effort. This team SHOULD be playing competitive football and they aren't. That's what I find intolerable. When Denver blew a chance at a TD with all the false start penalties, McDaniels practically had a stroke on the sideline. Where is the Giant's anger? Where is their passion? I'm not seeing it and that's what upsets me most. If NY loses while giving it all they got, okay, I can accept that. But rolling over? That should NEVER happen and should be met with an immediate response from the coaching staff and management. If a guy won't make the effort, put him on the bench and get the rookies in. Honestly, does anyone believe the rookies could do worse than what we saw in Denver? Hell, put in David Carr if you have to! Something, anything, beyond the now standard line of "We have to play better." So tired of hearing that from guys who then go out and play worse than the week before.

  7. You are right dweez115. I too "bled blue" in that era. I was a young boy on my dad's knee in 1963 watching the Giants in 10 degree weather lose to the Bears 14-10 in the NFL championship game. I was hooked!! I then suffered all those years until the ultimate prize in '86. It bothers me to see such complacency in this team. The Giants are all about "Blue Collar/Smash Mouth...In Your Face Football. I see none of this at all!!!! If I were the HC with only 5 games left I would fire Gilbride and take over the offense myself. If it works...GREAT! If it doesn't...then what did you lose? ( I don't believe Mara would do that ) I would not allow TC to pick any more Coordinators. He had his chances. Yes, he won a Super Bowl. But why does New England stay on top? Because they have the foresight to get rid of aging players on time. ( Seymour, Bruschi ) We old Giants fans have seen the dark side and do not want that to surface again.

  8. Mitch - the one problem that has been a constant throughout the years is the Mara family loyalty, especially to coaches. They are, by all reports, decent people who give people second chances. Under most circumstances, those are attributes to admire and emulate. In professional sports, especially now that loyal Giants fans have to pay huge fees for the "right" to purchase their tickets, you have to wonder if the Maras need to become a bit more cold blooded and more attuned to the bottom line - which in football is the win-loss column. That said, I'll take the Maras, and even an 0-16 Giants team, over Jerry Jones anyday.
