Dubious Opinion

Venerable New York Post columnist Steve Serby has an interesting take on free-agent-to-be Julius Peppers' chances of coming to the Giants. Said he'd make a good choice, especially if Osi Umenyiora leaves.

It's a fair enough point, though I tend to disagree. For all his marquee rep, I've never been a big Peppers fan. I've seen him get lost in too many games, and he's never truly had the big impact that a guy with six double-digit sack seasons should have. Still, he'd come with a huge pricetag, and I doubt the Giants would care to play in that ballpark.

Besides, he's a 3-4 guy. That doesn't mean he can't play a 4-3, or even stand up as a pass-rushing linebacker in a 3-4 look. I just think that, at 30, his best years probably aren't ahead of him.

That's must my opinion. Just for kicks, I want you guys to weigh this: Umenyiora vs. Peppers. Keep Osi, or cut him loose and go for Peppers. And no, you don't get to have both on the roster.

  1. UGGGGGHHHHHH Julius Peppers???!!! NO way! I agree Ernie, Whenever I've seen Peppers Play he's either great or completely lost and lost seems to be the majority. If the Giants get him and replace Osi then I think Reese has lost his mind. A 27 for a 30 year old on the downside? ABSOLUTELY NO WAY!

  2. Well Osi is only a year younger, has a bum knee and averages a tenth of a sack per game less than Peppers. So yeah I'd do that swap in a heartbeat; especially when you really cant be sure what you have in Kiwanuka

  3. I'm interested to see how Osi does with a new DC and another year post-knee operation. I don't think they should give up on him yet. As for Peppers, i'm not thrilled about that prospect. I think we are all a little affected by how poor the defensive line free agents did last year. That was a huge setback.

  4. As far as I can tell Peppers has had one big game for each season he's been in the NFL and after each such game everyone goes gaga over him and talks about what a great player he "could be" if he only did that every game. Well the problem is he doesn't do that every game. Why he's commanding $20 million a year is a mystery to me.

  5. Peppers is good but not worth the price tag.
Now that Osi has opened his big mouth he has no choice but to perform. I say you keep him. Also, Kiwanuka played well last year so I expect him to continue to get better.
The need LB's, not D linemen. Go get linebackers!!

  6. I agree with the above comments - No Peppers. The guy made way, way too much last year. Let Al Davis pay up for him.

I like Kiwi. However, if I got a first or high second plus another decent pick I would let Osi go.

I am hopeful a healthy Canty, Coefield, Alford, Kiwi, and Tuck will make a good rotation. It needs more depth though. However, I'm firmly with anyone who wants to get LB's and Safeties to shore up the D.

  7. KEEP OSI..he was just disappointed in his performance and venting. Give him a break...Let's not let the media throw another quality player out of New York! Make a serious play for Ryans from Houston, Sign FA Dansby and draft another LB first round, then add some more Db/S help with other rounds and we should be fine. But please stop this nonsense about OSI!

  8. Osi is really bad, a jerk and gets pushed off the ball EVERY run play. Did u watch at all? I didnt see him limping once this year so all yalls excuse about knee surgery is bs.

  9. Osi having a bad year is still a top-20 defensive end. No, that's not great, but he's arguably of equal value to Peppers. The difference?

Peppers requires a top-five level salary. Osi is a pretty good bargain. Sure, Osi thinks he's one of the top ends in football, but don't you want your players thinking they're one of the best at their position?

It would be complete stupidity to cut or trade Osi. Listen, if someone give you a first or second round pick, you probably can't pass that up. But anything else, what would be the point? Honestly, he's a very similar player to Simeon Rice, but the Giants don't have to pay Osi that much.

He got 2.5 mil this year and then gets 3.5 the next two seasons. Peppers just got paid 16 mil. this year.

FYI: The top paid defensive players on the Giants were Pierce (4.3) and Corey Webster (5.4). Interestingly enough, did you know in 2011 Webster salary balloons up to 8 mil.

  11. Pierce gone. Big news!

The shedding begins. Please let me hear the following names - CC Brown, Micheal Johnson, and Rocky Bernard - please step up. I think Fred Robbins will go too but Fred played some ball here!

To be honest, we should all give AP his due. He played the best he could here. He gave it his all. The guy is tops with me.

  12. EP Whats the deal on Pierce?

  13. You knew this was going to happen. He was a real solid player. He was one of my favorite players while he was on this team. His greatest play was in that Green Bay game in that 2007 run when he read the screen perfectly, beat three blockers and tackled the ball-carrier for minimal gain. If not for him, Green Bay could have scored a TD on that play.

It was his greatest play as a Giant. I hope he lands somewhere else, preferably not in the NFC East, but he was a class act all the way.

  14. Goodbye Mr. Pierce, and thank you! I wish you the best of luck in the future. Hopefully in the near future we can look upon you and call you "Coach" Pierce.

  15. Is it possible for AP to even play again with a bulging disk ? I think he's done

  16. So where do the Giants go now? Obviously Reese and his group have a plan. Is Goff the answer? Are they relying on the draft? Or are they now going to make Dansby a serious offer?

Hey Ernie, where the heck are you?
