One opinion on whether London will eventually get a Super Bowl and an NFL franchise.
What do you say? Would you like to see an overseas franchise in the NFL? And how about giving merry old England a Super Bowl, since the real fans can't attend it, anyway?

My last comment didn't post but more diplomatically put the gist of it was NO and NO!
ReplyDeleteWhat about my first comment Ern? Are u censoring?
ReplyDeleteWayno:
ReplyDeleteDon't know what happened to your first comment, but it wasn't censored. First I heard of it was when I saw your last two.
England getting a team? Horrible idea! Think players complain now about going west to east or east to west?!
ReplyDeleteBAD Idea! Hey let's put a franchise and Superbowl in L.A. before we put one overseas. Here's some more places that don't have NFL franchise: Alabama, Oregon, Mississippi, Nebraska, Oklahoma, San Antonio, TX, Houston, TX.....
ReplyDeleteI think you get my point.
just kidding about Houston...
ReplyDeleteI think it's inevitable, whether we like it or not. The Bills will go Toronto when Ralph Wilson dies and give Canada it's NFL team, Mexico is bound to get a team as well, and London will happen because the billionaires that run the League want it to. All we can hope for is that the London team isn't put into the NFC East.
ReplyDeleteGood to see you're keeping an eye on PFT, Ern. God knows, if Florio ever decides to take some of his NBC money and hire you away from here, you'll at least be the first person that can actually write that has ever worked for PFT. I would hate to lose a dedicated Giants site, but you at PFT would be a huge upgrade. Gregg Rosenthal mostly covers the NFC East over there and 1) he has NO idea what he's talking about 2) he apparently has never heard of "spell check" or even basic grammar.
I don't have a preference either way. So, yes, I am posting indifference rather than opinion.
ReplyDeleteI suppose international teams would at least validate players when they call themselves "world" champions.
It is not that I am against a team in Canada or Mexico, but I think that the NFL has got football where it needs to be. 32 teams, 16 game regular season, 6 playoff teams from each conference. I am not in favor of expanding to 18 games to begin with and sure hope that it does not happen. More teams would justify the increase in games. Call me a traditionalist, but I also do want to see the product go down. Logistically, having an NFL team in London would be brutal for all parties involved, and a franchise in Hawaii should be considered before England. I do agree that Buffalo will probably end up in Toronto at some point, but I also agree with John W, that other US cities, who would love an NFL team, should get a look at before expanding internationally.
ReplyDeleteThats so lame gggggmen. At least it would validate being "world" champs. Thats such a wannabe enlightened viewpoint that only comes off as being smarty pants. Its not llike its even baseball or basketball but even then I think its lame to say that. These terms were introduced quite some time ago so go vote for Obama again.
ReplyDeleteGive London a Pro Bowl, not a Super Bowl. Baby steps.....
ReplyDeletepersonally, i'd love a Super Bowl here. flying from JFK to London is maybe an hour or 2 more at most than flying to the west coast and with 2 weeks to prepare, it really shouldn't be an issue. as ernie says, real fans don't get to go anyway, so it shouldn't really matter from that standpoint. London is an amazing city, up there with NY, and it deserves a superbowl.
ReplyDeletein so far as a London Franchise goes... well, thats a bit further down the line. theres a lot of potential problems there. don't get me wrong, i'd love one, but i don't see it working out just yet.

ReplyDeleteCan only delete, no edit? bah
ReplyDeleteIn terms of Super Bowl, I don't think it matters if they have it in London, but on a financial level it's less moolah for a US city....and most of them need it right now. Lets have Detroit host every year until they can rebuild. = P
Toronto way before London
ReplyDeleteOpening Day Offense Starting Lineup:
ReplyDeleteOL Beatty Diehl Ohara Snee Mac---Should regain form and be a very capable line. Run blocking should improve with Deihl's move to guard
QB Manning --- Gaudy stats were the function of a terrible D but Eli has risen to a bonafide top 10 qb and Top 3 in the last 5 minutes of the game
RB Jacobs Hedgecock---Help is needed and probably will come in the form of a top draft pick next year. Hedgecock is functional at best and was never as good as his 08' press suggested
WR Smith Hicks --- Sky is the limit for Hicks, look for Smiths numbers to come down with an improved D
TE Boss Tough with good hands but only serviceable at best. Look for Beckum more on passing downs split out in 4 wide formations
A top 20 D and ST allows this offense to take GMEN to the playoffs.
Nicks, Wayno. I am sure you meant Hakeem Nicks. And I don't think Smith's numbers will decline as a result of the improved D. I don't think he will have as many receptions, which will lead to a drop in yards, but I would attribute that to Nicks getting more looks and HOPEFULLY an improved running game. But, look for Smith to maybe fall in the 85-95, with 1000+, and maybe around 7 TDs. What would be awesome is if Nicks could fall into the same range, but I see him more around 70 catches, 900, 5 TDs.
ReplyDeleteGOGOLACKING
ReplyDeleteI agree with the assessment of Boss, serviceable only and we need to see both Pascoe and Beckum on the field. Don't forget Manningham at WR.
I also agree with the assessment of Hedgecock and got tired of seeing him get blown back a bit more last year than in the past. FB is a short career span..perhaps one will fall to us after cuts are made..
Nicks will have more yards than Smith
ReplyDelete^^Bold prediction....I like it.
ReplyDeleteI hope your right Wayno, especially if Smith pulls off another 100+, 1000 yds + season.
ReplyDeleteManningham is the player,
ReplyDeletePrediction
SMith 85 rec, 1090, 6
Manningham 70, 850, 4
Nicks 55, 850, 3
Boss 45, 600, 4
bradshaw 30, 400, 2
Barden 20, 300, 3
Ernie,
ReplyDeleteNo.
The NFL does not need London, Sri Lanka, Krakatoa & Aleutian Island teams to round out the league.
A lesson could be learned from The defunct WFL. For all its minor relevance now in 2010, the WFL tried a team in Honolulu Hawaii in 1974-75 (Jim Fassel was their qb for the Giants connection here). The results were a disaster due to time difference and travel schedules.
I would say "yes" to this question if the Space plane had been fully developed in the 1980's. that space plane would allow Moscow to DC travel time of 2 hour's. that is not happening anytime too soon.
My insane pre-season prediction...Eli has better year than Peyton, statistically and final record!
ReplyDeleteYes Insane and how can anyone predict a better yr out of Manningham than Nicks. Too many drops for Him and Nicks clearly showed more promise with better route running and hands.
ReplyDeleteWayno, yes, manningham is wildly inconsistent, but he'll get better, the things hes bad at are things which can be fixed with (relative) ease. personally i agree with you that Nicks will have a better season, but i wouldn't bet against MM; hes got that game changing ability and if people are focusing on Smith and Nicks, he could find himself running free fairly often.
ReplyDeleteNicks got a lot of mileage out of broken plays and catching deflected balls. I did not see him getting the kind of separation that Mario gets.
ReplyDeleteWhoever posted that the Bills will move to Toronto when Ralph Wilson dies or gives up control of the team. I guess I don't see how Toronto is any better for the franchise; the Bills sellout every game. The NFL may want the larger audience that Toronto could bring; but one could say the same about LA.
ReplyDeleteIf the Giants receivers put up the numbers that everyone on this board is predicting I think they are in trouble. Their best years are when they run the ball for 200 per game, not pass for 300.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone see Tim Brown from Rutgers making this team? what about Derek Hagan?
ReplyDeleteI read the summer interview with Travis Beckum and what I come away with is that he is a disgruntled TE in the Coughlin/Gilbride system (like Shiancoe)
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, in my lifetime, we have never had a WR corps such as this one. I think we are predicting high numbers, because we have a great QB, with a very solid, if not good, WR group. Considering what I think will be our starting 4 WRs (Smith, Nicks, Manningham, Barden), we have speed, good hands, and the ability to separate. Granted, Barden is untested, but the rest are tested, proven (somewhat proven in other cases), and eager. I do not see Jacobs ever going over 1000 yds again due to his "fragileness" and I do not think that Bradshaw can shoulder a load of more than 15 carries/game. If KG were smart, and thats a big "if", he would realize that the weapons are there to really attack teams from the air in 2010. Use the run to set-up playaction and then pour it on. Run some no huddle, with intermediate, underneath routes. Keep the opposing D on their back heels.
ReplyDeleteI love the picture on the NJ dot com site of Nicks, this is the play when #52, a defensive lineman, nearly caught him in a sprint to the goal.
ReplyDeleteEither he was slowed by the toe, or the Eagles really know how to draft athletic players. I'm hoping it's the former
TO CE718,
ReplyDeleteDo you think we need some backfield help? I totally agree with the assessment of Jacobs, too fragile and I'd prefer the Giants to get rid of him too soon rather than too late. I wish they had spent a draft pick on Joe McKight, he was there in the late rounds. I'm curious about Andre Brown, but I have doubts. he was largely unproductive at NC State and seems to carry his share of injuries
I would say that in the next few years, using a first or second on a RB should be necessary. I would say that right now, we have enough for a decent, maybe even good, ground attack. There are a lot of variables involved though. (i.e. Jacobs ability to lower that shoulder again, Bradshaw's bionic feet). I too am curious about Brown and he kind of is the "x" factor right now in my book. If he can become the next Ward, which was the hope when he was drafted, then I think our ground attack will be great. If his achilles falters or he turns into Ware, then I hope Johnson can step up. Who knows about the cuts that will be made after pre-season and maybe a diamond in the rough comes out of it. But, right now, I think we are okay, just not as good as 2 years ago.
ReplyDelete"I guess I don't see how Toronto is any better for the franchise"
ReplyDeleteThat's because you're only looking at ticket sales. 1) Toronto has larger TV audience, so ad revenue (which is shared, goes up) 2) Instantly becomes "Canada's team", so jersey sales, merchandising, etc. goes up dramatically 3) Buffalo is a dying city, without the University it would be dead already. Toronto is growing 4) New Stadium will be built and with it, stadium naming rights, increased luxury suites, PSLs, etc., etc 5) If you still don't think Toronto is a better option, then ask yourself why are the Bills playing games there already?
