Was doing something else yesterday when the Giants waived Domenik Hixon. No big deal there, because they had to do it in order to put him on IR in August.
Don't know if it's the heat or humidity, but you guys are getting awful testy in your comments. Again, keep it civil. If somebody gets snarky, ignore it. Best way to knock down a know-it-all is to know more, and say it more logically.

Here is another one that slipped by you Ern. The Giants signed a special teams dynamo Adam Jennings. The five year vet played one game for the Lions last year before going on IR. He has returned kicks and punts but is known as being a standout covering kicks. Just what the Giants need. Now if Reese can find a couple more of these guys, Moss, Hagan and even Barden can be expendable.
ReplyDeleteErnie - feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't waiving Hixon is taking a bit of risk? He's now eligible to be picked up by another team. Now granted, injured players are usually left alone, but as it was pointed out on PFT yesterday, Jacksonville grabbed Don Carey from the Browns when Cleveland waived him because of a shoulder injury. The Jags put him on IR and made him part of the starting D this year. You would have to think that at least one team might be interested in the upgrade to special teams Hixon could provide them at a fairly reasonable price. Also, where he is the fourth or fifth WR for NY, I think he could wind up being the third WR on a WR desperate team like the Bears. I think you're understating the gamble NY is taking here. If I'm misunderstanding the rules and procedure, I apologize, but I think NY could potentially lose Hixon.
ReplyDeleteI don't get it. If they waive Hixon do they not have to pay him the one year tender he signed? if that's the case that is really FU! I really like Hixon...never gets in trouble and is a solid and sometimes spectacular football player! If he get's picked up by another team...which is somewhat unlikely since he is injured...that would be FU too!
ReplyDeleteWhy do you have to waive someone to put them on IR? I though you just put him on IR.
Either way I hope we keep Hixon. He is a good player that is still on the young side!
wayno....dynamo? AJ returned kicks for an average of 22 yards per return. He'll be gone by August
ReplyDeletePatti at Inside Football has a good piece explaining the waiver system.

This isn't the charity business and if u haven't noticed from the PSL scam, the Giants owners are a bunch of no good, money grubbing, half wits who will lose all of their money by the time I die. I will enjoy it all as long as Dolan doesn't buy the team.
ReplyDeleteYes- DYNAMO! This guy has a reputaation of being one of the best COVERAGE guys in the league the last few years and if u didn't notice that was probably the top problem with Giants ST last year along with the weak foot of Lawrence "my brother is a felon and I was involve in organized crime with him" Tynes. So DYNAMO it is.
ReplyDeleteGood site anonymous. I am not really worried if we lose Hixon out of this deal. It does open the opportunity to have Barden fight for that #3 spot with Manningham and I sure hope that Barden's work with Smith pays off come training camp. Yes, Hixon kept his nose clean and had a few stellar games, but he is a solid WR. With Smith, Nicks, and Manningham, Hixon may have been strictly our return/ST guy. Heck, Manningham may turn into that anyway. Boy, I just can't wait for the end of August when all of these quesitons get played out. Exciting time!
ReplyDeleteGo Big Blue!
how can be the one of the best coverage guys in the league the last few years when he missed the entire season last year? If that's the case, bring back Tyree...
ReplyDeleteI disagree that punt and kick coverage were a problem. The giants punted 64 times, gave up 258 yards in returns and 1 TD, that's about 4 yrds per return. The kicking game problems were almost entirely the fault of having a weak leg kicker; a poor strategy for kicking. I don't think it was due to lack of adequate coverage guys, particularly the punting game.
If you want to say that the return game was a problem, then I would agree. You wanted them to take CJ Spiller, who would have taken care of all of these problems; 3rd down RB, KR, PR. Again, it points out that jerry reese is not a good GM
How is Jerry Reese a bad GM??????? His entire first draft class was instrumental in winning a game called THE SUPER BOWL against a team that woulda went down as the greatest ever. Jerry is a GOD and always will be.
ReplyDeleteReese is not a good GM why, anon? Because he didn't trade up to number 8 to get Spiller? I thought the idea was to trade up to number 9 to pick McClain before the Raiders got to him. Either way, he didn't make the trade, and the Giants ended up with JPP. That makes Reese a bad GM?
ReplyDeleteI have no problem with the fact that Reese did not draft Spiller. He would have had to given up a lot in order to trade up to get Spiller. So much for the matter that the same amount could have gotten us the 2nd or 3rd overall picks. Hindsight is 20/20 and JR could not foresee Hixon blowing his knee out during a non-contact drill and our 3rd rounder getting into a horrific car accident. I think the verdict of Reese's GM abilies might still be under review. His first draft has been very good for us thus far and too early to tell on his second and third drafts. Yes, he had some FA signing busts, so I would right off the bat put him in the "B" range. He is definitely better than the dude running San Diego, be glad for that.
ReplyDeleteBut I do agree with your analysis on the ST from last year.
ReplyDeleteB Grade?????? What do u want a Super Bowl every year? A bunch of closet racists like Rush Limbaugh on this board.
ReplyDeleteDespite Wayno's usual hyperbole, it's too early to say definitively where Reese stands as a GM. One good draft that was immediately impactful does not a "god" make. Let's see what this year's picks do and what last year's rookies and FAs develop into. I don't think the man can be fairly judged until he's been on the job for at least five years, especially since the NFL rule of thumb is it takes three years to really evaluate a draft. I do agree that the Giants would have had to given up too much to get Spiller. Not to mention the problems a draft pick in the top ten causes salary wise. Lots of proven vets resent, for good reason, college kids that have never taken a snap in the NFL getting the disproportionately huge, guaranteed contracts that the top ten picks get. The League desperately needs a rookie salary cap.
ReplyDeleteBoss up the seam, Alford lays out Brady, deflection by Thomas, Bradshaw up the middle. Short memory span by all u Reese bashers. THAT WAS THE GREATEST SUPER BOWL EVER!!!!!!!! AND THE GIANTS WERE CHAMPS!!!!!! REESE=GOD
ReplyDeleteWayno2424, you only detract from the conversation. The only thing you can add is addition by the subtraction of yourself.
ReplyDeleteReese is not the only person in the front office so he can neither take all the credit of all the blame.
ReplyDeleteThe Giants have had some questionable drafts lately and it seems that certain areas of need go unmet. The current team has some deficiencies, particularly with the health status of the RBs and the inexperience at LB.
They have had a recent run of bad luck with some of their FA signings. We'll see how well Grant and Rolle do as the safeties.
Patti T had a blog spot on Boss that I can't let pass.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sold on Boss, just not. he was inproductive last year, but I guess that was due to the injury. I know that he has great hands and is tough over the middle, but I think he's not a major weapon. I'd like to see more of Jake Ballard and Scott Chandler and less of Kevin Boss and Bear Pascoe
To Anonymous 2:49 PM, the Giants have too much money tied into the RB position with Jacobs and Brown. How could Reese justifiably add another high round draft pick at that position?
ReplyDeleteThe LB position, on the other hand, is dismal. I understand the Giants philosophy of spending the money upfront, but he has done a poor job in adding a marginal impact player at that position.
Wayno, I said in the "B" range (B- to B+) if I were to CONSIDER giving him a grade on anything, which I stated it is way too early to tell. I am not sold on him bringing in Bernard, CC, Rouse; furthermore, the verdict is still out on Canty and Boley, as they had fairly injury plagued seasons. Do I think JR has done a good job so far as our GM? YES! Am I ready to call him a "god"? Absolutely not. And don't bring race into the equation. Ernie wants us to keep this place classy and I fully respect that. I thought with your clear passion for Ernie, you would abide.
ReplyDeleteDweez, I have always loved the thought of a rookie salary cap.
Wayno - Let's not forget that those rookies that did, absolutely, help win that Super Bowl were surrounded by veterans drafted by another GM. Like it or not, it is just too early to judge Reese. It is still, in many ways, Accorsi's team. We need time to judge Reese's other drafts and his FA signings. I think that those who scream for his head are just as wrong as those who wish to enshrine him in the HOF. GM is a long term, body of work. The man just has not been on the job long enough for us to know where he stands as far as his overall abilities. In two, three years it will be clearer as to whether or not he may, indeed, someday reach "god" status.
ReplyDeleteBTW - I second CE718 - we don't need to bring race OR politics onto this blog. We can disagree about enough things related to football alone without bringing that crap into it. All that does is pour gasoline onto the fire.
from GOGOLACK
ReplyDeleteI haven't posted in awhile, but I read. I think there are just as many reasons to cut Ware as there are to cut Moss, and yet we keep both of these players. IMO its about getting these guys on the field so they can be evaluated. personally I think we've seen enough of these two to let them go but Barden and Brown? We have not seen at all.
When Dez Bryant and CJ Spiller are eating up the league, where will JPP be?
ReplyDeleteIt's always good to see GOGO back on the blog.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to the season, i believe there was blog out there about the 53 man roster and when I read it i got the impression that the team is more or less set. Many of the player people get excited about did not make the list. personally I think the giants have kept too many players on the roster for too long; Moss, Kehl, Wilkerson, Bernard, Whimper, Tollefson, Hagan...just alot of old faces where new ones might be refreshing. The team will get old in a hurry if they don't watch out
"When Dez Bryant and CJ Spiller are eating up the league, where will JPP be?"
ReplyDeleteSince you know, for a fact, that those two will be guaranteed successes, you obviously can see into the future, so you tell us.
BTW - The Cowboys draft board, whcih was made public by accident when Jones posed for a picture for the Dallas media, Dallas had JPP ranked as a number 1-15 player on their board. So, since you seem to think Jones knows his stuff, I guess the JPP pick wasn't so bad since Jerry thought JPP was a top 15 player.

Forgot to include the other link which includes the confirmation from Dallas about the picture and how it was set up. My bad.
