Okay, gang. Let's have a discussion. Who thinks Bill Cowher is going to wait around for Tom Coughlin to retire -- or be fired if the the 2010 goes south -- to get back into coaching? And do you think that a coach who probably would look for total control would be a good fit for the Giants? Do you think the Giants would give him anything he wanted?
Let's go.

He wouldnt get full control but the whole story definately makes sense. Cowher is still relatively young and can wait to pick his job. If that is the Giants or Carolina I think hed love it but otherwise he could wait around for any # of jobs that arent the Bills, Redskins or Raiders.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure that I'm into Cowher. I was really hoping the Giants would go "new school" with their next head coach hiring. Cowher is not that guy. Spags, unfortunately, was.
ReplyDelete1. I don't consider Bettis a reliable source in this. Maybe that was Cowher's feelings at some time, but who knows if he feels like that now?
ReplyDelete2. I like Coughlin (but would welcome Cowher) and I don't think it's fair to consider a guy waiting in the wings while Coughlin is trying to turn this team around. He clearly runs the show for 2010, so let's let TC do his thing and talk about Cowher next offseason.
3. I think Cowher's wish to take full control is in the even he were asked to coach for say...the Redskins, Raiders, Bill, etc. Sounds like he has a respect for Mara and I think Reese has earned trust, so while Cowher's word would be taken into account, I don't think he would need full control in OUR organization.
I'm betting the Giants win enough next year to make the discussion moot. If they tank though, it makes sense. He fits the Giants' coaching mold.
ReplyDeleteI think it is too early to tell at this point. The 2009-2010 season is not over yet and who knows what happens on all teams over the course of the next month or so. I remember Cowher was identified as a potential replacement for TC when '07 was looking lost. A reason for Cowher to the Giants was that his daughter was a student at Princeton. Who knows if she graduated. In Bettis' opinion, Cowher would want a team with an established QB. That would not be Carolina as of right now. Delhomme is on his way out and Moore still has a lot to prove. Right now, the Giants are TC's team. He has brought us to the promised land and has gotten this team to 5 straight playoff appearances. I am not ready to slam the door on TC. He has done a good job with the Giants so far and I don't entirely blame the 8-8 on him. We have no idea what Fewell is going to do and how he can aide TC in turning this team back into a powerhouse. Is Gilbride's contract up this year or the end of next? These are all factors into whether Cowher will be here next year or in the future. I necessarily don't want to over think it because TC has earned, and deserves, my support.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I like Cowher. I think he is a good, firey coach that motivates well and can lead a team to the Super Bowl. He possesses a great football mind and has demonstrated loyalty (15 years with one team). If TC gets fired, leaves, retires, etc. I would love to have Cowher.
It was never my impression that he had a great football mind. A lot of his success was 1) having a great defensive coordinator and 2) having a great organization. I am also bummed that Spags got away.
ReplyDeleteWell, one step at a time. Do we have agreement that another year like 2009 and TC will, respectfully, be push to 'move upstairs' in the NYG organization?
ReplyDeleteErnie - What also plays a part in this is the long term relationship and friendship between the Rooneys and the Maras. I believe there has even been a wedding between the two families. Would the Rooneys green light this? I can't see this even being an option unless the Rooneys tell the Maras face to face that they don't mind. That said, bottom line, Cowher's numbers are not that much better than Coughlin's numbers are with the Giants. I like Cowher, I think he is a good, NOT GREAT, coach, but I also feel that some people grossly exaggerate his "genius". Under NO circumstances should the Giants give him total control. That never works out long term. Finally, I don't believe the man will wait. Too much money at stake.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with dweez here a bit on his angle with the families. Cowher worked for the Rooney's for 15 years so the Mara's would listen to them, if, if they are interested.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, while I believe TC has to get to the playoffs in 2010 to keep his job he has certainly earned the opportunity to turn the Giants around. Cowher's record is comparable to TC's, so if TC has not lost the players then I just don't see the need. I think these questions will be cleared up next season but for now its just conjecture.
However, I am in the camp of having an experienced guy in the role versus an up and comer if it all unravels for TC. No way he, or anyone else, gets to run the show though. When does that really ever work? Reese is staying put. Again, it's still and long way from here to there in my mind.

Ern, back to the board whattya got now? Any word on Quinn?
ReplyDelete1. I don't think Cowher is going to wait for the Giants.
ReplyDelete2. Yes if things go south next season Coughlin will be fired.
3. I don't think Cowher or any other coach will be given total control. That's not how the Giants operate and rightfully so.
