Here's a name you might want to watch out for on draft day, just because his stock appears to be soaring right now during Senior Bowl practices: Mike Iupati.
The 6-foot-6, 325-pound interior offensive lineman from Idaho is opening eyes and apparently soaring up the draft board. Best of all, he'll probably be there when the Giants pick at No. 15. As I said yesterday, it's way too early to start divining the draft, but I have a feeling this guy's name might end up being in that cluster of candidates, especially considering the offensive line is entering a transitional stage.
Iupati is currently regarded as the best guard in the draft. He's quick, has 35-inch arms, and reportedly has a nasty streak about him. Might be worth keeping an eye on him through the combine and private workouts.

While I would not be shocked to see Reese take a guard/tackle in the first round I really hope they don't. The Giants can get by with boothe/veteran pickup or boothe/young guard/tackle taken in a later round. I still want Spikes. As I've said before I don't know squatm about college football but I thought Spikes was SICK! And if not him a DT or safety which should probably be the first two priorities.
ReplyDeletethe word out of senior bowl practice is that he dominates at guard, but is still a work in progress at tackle.
ReplyDeleteAgree and disagree with you Wayno. Our O-line can wait until later in the draft; however, I am not as sold on Spikes as you. I will wait until after the combine to make a full, educated point, but I do not think Spikes is going to our best option in the first round.
ReplyDeleteInteresting choice there Ernie. I still think that the pick will be a safety(Taylor Mays) or Linebacker (Rolando McClain).
ReplyDeleteI think I would rather see us go defense first at either DT or ILB. O-Lineman can always be picked up in later rounds. We had a glaring deficiency on Dee....I would like to see that addressed first.
ReplyDeleteDefense? Offense? Offensive Line? Defensive Line? Linebacker? Safety? I don't know it seems like we need a little bit in everything. I don't see any one need outweighing the other but if something good comes up in the first round that you can't pass up , a player so good in any of the positions mentioned that need to be filled, then I think just take him. All other positions can br found in later rounds.
ReplyDelete"Iupati is currently regarded as the best guard in the draft."
ReplyDeleteIf he's that highly regarded, no way he makes it to 15. O lineman are too valuable now-days and they cost a fortune in free agency.
I'd be surprised if Reese drafts an interior lineman in the first round. I'm guessing (hoping) he goes LB or Safety.
