Osi's Upset

Osi Umenyiora told the Associated Press in an e-mail that he was saddened by the firing of well-regarded defensive line coach Mike Waufle.

"I am extremely saddened by it," Umenyiora said. "He is a great coach and we have a special relationship. I'm sure he will be OK though because there should be very high demand for a coach of his caliber."

Umenyiora should be sad. He became a Pro Bowler in 2007 under Waufle's tutelage. But on the flip side, his play declined enough this year despite Waufle's coaching to cause Umenyiora to lose his starting job after the Denver game.

Think some of those defensive linemen are starting to look at themselves in the mirror a bit?

  1. Screw Osi, just another reason to get rid of this loudmouth. Somehow this loser has trade value and both tc/jr know he will be off the team.

  2. Ernie,

We can only hope. That was a good coach and I am pretty sure he will coach somewhere next year. However, everyone of his guys should take that one personally. Too much talent in that group and too little results.

  5. For goodness sake; read what the guy sad: "i am saddened that my position coach got fired..." I don't see any whining and if there was anything to worry about Osi's reaction to his benching late in the season was that he DIDN'T get upset. You guys are the real whiners!!!!

  6. So, a coach who spends 14 hours a day preparing for games, reviewing films, running practices, and attending staff meetings should spend the few minutes of personal time he has "talking football" to some lunkhead who owns "Madden" games and has fantasy teams? And if he doesn't, that makes him a "douche?"

    LMAO.

  7. I wonder if this could possibly be a signal that Waufle tended to side, however lightly and respectfully, with 'his boys on the D Line' against Sheridan and Sheridan's beef with Osi? That, in effect, Waufle became--in Oprah speak--the enabler of Osi.

Firing both of them is sorta like a pox on both your houses.

Just navel gazing on my part but I wonder.....

  8. @had enough

please note i used the word "seems," hence why i was asking ernie. i am asking because he stormed out of a meeting during training camp, complained all 2007 off season about the contract he signed a year before, talked about maybe playing his last game with the giants after this years finale. how about him being saddened that he is a shell of the player we once thought he was.

  9. Sure seems like a firing meant to send a message to the players. Waufle seemed like one of the better coaches on the staff. Must be something internal we are not aware of.

  10. I wonder who is deciding to make these changes, is it reese, coughlin, or a combination of both?

  11. why is it that we believe Waufle is a good coach? It's a NJ-thing, someone sticks around long enough and they gain a reputation rather than earn one. Strahan, Tuck are studs who would be pro-bowl caliber no matter what, who else has played a signficant role in the DL; some vets like Clancy, Robbins and Wynn. What about other players like undrafted guys such as Maurice Evans, what about Tollefoson, Osi and Kiwi..have any of these guys turned into complete players? If you think these guys are better because of the coaching, than you should be upset..If not, then move on. The NFL is a coaches league and technique and teaching mean something. The O-line was consistently been able to take late round picks and turn them into Pro Bowl caliber players, the D-line has limited success at this.

  12. This better serve as a wake up call to this group. Waufle was one of my favorite coaches. Loved his intensity and I had really hoped he would survive the house cleaning.

This group cost a good coach his job. Hope they take that to heart. If they have any left of course...
