Keep It Going

Let's keep the draft conversation going. Here's a question that's been going around the blog.

Should Jerry Reese trade up into the Top-10, or be content to sit at No. 15, or trade down for extra picks?

Discuss.

  1. Stay put- we should be able to get either Spiller, Morgan, or McClain

  2. Seems like the final days before and during the draft with the built "negotiation-re-evaluation time periods" will make it difficult for those considering a move not to be prepared to move up or down. Looks like the Birds have prepared for that opportunity...and, why not Reese and NYG? Should be a lot of If-Then scenarios as each move is made prior to and during the draft. It goes without saying that if we could get an impact player (contributing something this year) then doing that Move Up would be warranted. Otherwise, at 15 we do have a decent position to get at least one draftee that will be of value (always a crap shoot). Moving down seems okay too....we seem to thrive best with 2nd and 3rd round successes, plus less bucks to pay them re the usual 1st round slotting circus. Spiller or McClain would be good additions in the first - as for the 2nd - who knows?

  3. The giants have a ton of needs, so trading back is the best thing for them. If McClain is off the board and they have no interest in Spiller, then trade back.

In the past 5 Accorsi/Reese years, we've done real well with round one, grabbing Eli Manning (Rivers), Corey Webster, Mathias Kiwanuka,Aaron Ross, Kenny Phillips, and Hakeem Nicks.

You have to go back to 2003 to find a first round pant load: William Joseph (thanks for the scouting report, Jeremy Shockey).

  5. Short answer no. Long answer, if Spiller is available and Reese wants to trade up to get him and doesnt think he will be there at 15(he won't) then go for it Jerry. A dynamic back like Spiller does not come around every year and if these boneheaded(they are actually just being coy) gm's don't see it they will be reminded just as the 4 teams that passed up AP that needs aren't always the most important thing when drafting (Spiller actually fills a huge need for the GMEN too, 3rd down/PR/KR/future HOF).

  6. I say stay where they are, unless Reese wants to move back and accumulate picks.

But Ernie, you know better than I, what would the Giants have to give up to move into the top 10?

It could be quite a few picks, and in a draft this supposedly loaded, I can't see Reese giving up two or three mid-round picks to move up five spots in the first round.

  7. Sorry, Wayno, disagree. No way should we move up for Spiller. The only player we should move up for is McClain. He fills our biggest need. Yes, Spiller would be a nice luxury (and gives us a home run threat), but I don't want the Giants to spend extra picks just to get him. If Spiller falls to 15, and McClain gone, great, Reese should pull the trigger. This, of course, is all just my opinion. Giants need LBs first and foremost. If McClain and Spiller gone, Reese doesn't move up, get the DE Morgan from GA Tech or a stud OT. And Lou, responding to you from the other article, Crohn's is a tough disease to live with, but it does not always translate into a bowel resection. I have a friend with this disease, who is an athlete, and she has been able to manage her life quite well. Now, she does not endure the rigors of an NFL player, but has run a marathon and played rugby. It is all about managing the disease and I am sure the Giants' doctors would become experts in doing that.

  8. Should be a good value at either OL, RB or CB at 15. Stay pat.

You are right about Crohn's. I also know a couple of people who have it. While they both keep it under control and lead somewhat normal lives, they have also each done some brief stints in the hospital too. It's a tricky thing to have. In fact, I believe that McClain had to cut short his workout during "pro day" because of it already.

  10. I know one dude with Crohn's and he is fine sometimes and other times he is laid up for days at a time and does stints in the hospital. This is a limited experience and certainly not a veiled attempt by me to serve the Spiller Kool aid but we should be wary of spending a first rounder.

  11. Lou, he did cut it short due to the Crohn's. But, he has endured Crohn's throughout his college career. I theorize that the pro day was more stressful than the national championship game. Different running through those drills having all eyes on you than playing in a game. Could account for the flare up. Just an idea though. I would be more worried about other ailments.

  12. We need to get Spiller. Need a home run threat to combat Jackson and Jones. We currently don't have anyone that scares opposing defenses. Move up and get Spiller. He won't be there at 15.

  13. The draft is too deep to trade away picks. The Giants will either stay put or move down a few spots.

The main concern here is at the MLB position. This draft is full of 3-4 backers, so the Giants may want to target this position swiftly.

And for those clamoring for Spiller, the Giants do not need to spend a 1st round pick on a PR/KR, especially when guys like Dexter McCluster and Jacoby Ford can be had in later rounds.

  14. corey webster was drafted in the second round. also if memory serves me right we traded down for kiwi, i believe we traded with the steelers who had the last pick in the first round that year. i believe we used the extra pick gained to move up to take moss, whoops

  15. Stay put. In Reese we trust to get a good player at the 15 spot.

  16. Stay put and keep your fingers crossed for McClain

  17. Anonymous, I like your thinking.

  18. !!!!!!!!!!!!!HERE ME OUT ON THIS!!!!!!!

Hey all, I seen the Redskins are trying to trade away Albert-O Haynesworth. Anyone think Osi for Haynesworth would be a good idea.

  19. draft spiller at 15 and Weatherspoon in 2nd round.

  20. The guy got a contract that pays him $41 million guaranteed with $32 million within the 1st year.

The Redskins aren't trying to trade him, the Redskins are trying to dump his contract to any suitor willing to take it.

    Absolutely 'NO'!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Absolutely not on Haynesworth! Let him become a Raider. I think Osi is here to stay for 2010, which in my opinion might not be the worst thing in the world. Hopefully he has something left to prove. If he is still looking for a better contract, I hope Reese tells him to get his butt on the field and perform AND then he will get the nice big contract for an elite DE.

  22. I'm not too keen on mcclain. Spikes seems a.better fit butis slower than what the giants need. I want spiller just to get the screen game going again. Tale a second round ilb who is the best on the giants board..

  23. I dunno, from what everyone is saying this is a super deep draft. Plus, meat and potato guys are found in rounds two plus. I include running backs in that as well.

Here is the thing. MLB is an obvious hole, but Reese still has options both outside(Kirk Morrison anyone?) and inside the team. Taking a running back is always risky. I know CJ Spiller has a great highlight reel. So did Ron Dayne! Personally, I just don't trust RB's in round 1 and the rate of injury / durability is so low here. I know you can do great but it can also blow up.

I put all that together and I would stay pat or trade down for extra picks if McClain is gone. I'm with those who thing CJ Spiller won't be here by the way. The one thing about Spiller and his highlight reel is someone will bite because he would sell seats.

  24. Trade down unless McClain is there. I dont think Spiller is worth a first. Is Reggie Bush worth the 2nd pick of the draft?

I will take another 2nd round pick, that is for sure.

  25. And the Giants don't have the best luck when drafting first round RBs.

Somebody mentioned Ron Dayne, let's not forget Rodney Hampton who had a promising career then one game his knee locked in the tunnel pregame and he never played again.

Then you have the immortal Tyrone Wheatley. Drafted 17th overall and never topped 600 yards rushing in a season.

I'm not saying Spiller is going to be one of those three, but our track record has not been very good.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hey Dan, You make it sound like RH played only 3 games. He played from 1990-1997. He had great stats. That was a great pick. Wheatley and Dayne were busts but dont lump Hampton in with them.

    ReplyDelete
  27. If you want to, one can pick any position and find a draft bust. The draft is all about finding "players" not highlight reels or workout wonders.

McClain or Spiller will be there for the giants, we will draft one of them and be immensely satisfied.

to the posts about Haynesworth, the 32 million in the first year has already been paid to him, the team that picks him up pays the remainder of the guaranteed money and roster bonuses, which could be as little as 9 million for 2 seasons (it escalates if he stays past 2012). This is not a bad deal, money wise. Plus the redskins do not want him so they have little bargaining power. he may be out of shape, but i think it says a lot that the Titans want him back, and his old Def coor (now head coach) in Detroit want him too...

    ..worth the risk IMO

  28. The worst draft busts are the WRs.

    ReplyDelete
  29. They should stay put at 15. I'm not convinced McClain is the second coming of Harry Carson... Especially with Crones Disease. If they draft Spiller, they better be prepared to start him early and often, as RB's have a limited shelf life in the NFL. How's Kenny Phillips' Knee? There's alot of top safety's out there this year...

    ReplyDelete
  30. Dan was thinking of RB Joe Montgomery (knee locking in tunnel bit)...he forgot to add Jarrod Bunch to the pile, and some would say George Adams. although in this mans opinion, Adams had his moments. Maybe not #1 draft choice moments, but he was fast in his day...oh and Butchie Woolfolk comes to mind from 1982...

2010 NYG draft pick? best player available..

  31. Usually with the draft i have a favourite guy, a player that above all else i want us to target. this year, no such guy; anyoen we take at 15 is good enough to improive our team. having said that, i do like Sean Lee of Penn in the second.
