Myron Rolle, rated the seventh-best strong safety by NFL Draft Scout, had a private workout yesterday and posted drastically improved times from his combine numbers.
Rolle, whose departure from Florida State last year to explore the academic wonders of a Rhodes Scholarship at Oxford has led scouts to question his commitment to football, ran a 4.5 40, more than .2 seconds faster that his February time. He also did all the other drills that were asked of him.
Only one scout showed up, according to reports. But he's still looked upon as a middle-round prospect, and he's been mentioned often on this blog. You guys want him as a third or fourth-rounder?

If Rolle was drafted it would obviously be for depth at the safety position although I wouldnt mind it. I am all for the Giants drafting players that will make this team better for the future.
ReplyDeleteActually Rolle would be a great addition and would surely lead to the dismissal of Michael Johnson. Of course with the recent signings, he'll be more of a special teams guy and can benefit from a year of learning. If significant progress is made after year 1, the Giants could then opt to not re-sign Grant. He would be a very good pickup in the latter rounds.
ReplyDeleteWhy not? He was pretty good at FSU and Michael Johnson SUXXXXXXXXXXXXX!
ReplyDeletequality character, extremely bright, and a hard worker. if he's there in the 4th they gotta take him
ReplyDeleteI guess as a 4th rounder, sure... But we all know the glaring needs that remain ahead of the FA-quenched safety need, which I believe remain in this order : MLB, DT, OL (any quality depth, eventual starter), TE (blocking), RB (pure speed).
ReplyDeleteOn a side note, Ernie, any word on DT Jay Alford's recovery? I haven't heard anything on his rehab (where he is at in the whole process? Will he be ready for TC, etc.?) Any info is appreciated. Peace... JB
What's this world coming to? A football player decides to take an opportunity to make himself a better person by going to a prestigious school and his commitment is immediately questioned.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile others are testing for marijuana, to the point that SI's Don Banks says there is an epidemic and nobody is questioning their commitment.
i honest to God have no problems with him takign a year out to study because a) its the smart long term choice, b) its a once-in-a-life-time one-person-in-a-million chance. and as fort the whole 'commitment' thing, people shoudl think about this. the kid mis smart. i man, proper, Sheldon from the big bang theory smart, to the point where he is in a position to pursue a career as a neurosurgeon and yet the kid still wants to play football where just one hit, not even a big one, could ruin that dream. yeah, i'm gonna assume this kid is committed.
ReplyDeletei'm also going to assume his wonderlic score is off the chart. to have him in the locker room alongside super mario would be, well, it would make me chuckle.
Take him! I have held that position for awhile now. I think he is a great pick up and I would do so as high as round 3. Grant is a stop gap at this point in his career and as much as it pains me to say it, KP might not make it back.
ReplyDeleteI think it's hilarious that scouts and GM's are rating him down because he is smarter than them. "Wow, a football player with a brain? What do we do with him?" Rolle will have something to prove as well, which I like. He probably could have been a round 2 guy if didn't go to Oxford.
Now, I take him because the guy can play. He has the size and skill. This would be just a classic Reese pick-up in the middle rounds that has a very good chance of working.

Rolle is also a New Jersey kid, which couldn't hurt. I'd take him, but he's not likely to last past the 3rd. The bigger question is would you give up multiple late picks to gain an extra 3rd or 4th to pick him?
ReplyDeleteGetting Rolle in either the 2nd or 3rd round is like geting a 1st round performer with tremendeous upside.
ReplyDeleteDid you guys see his Pro Day numbers? I was very impressed with his pro-shuttle and 3 cone drills. Numbers seems to be better than numbers listed on nfl.com from the NFL Combine. Rolle seems to answer his critics about his agility, hips and quickness.
Myron Rolle would be a great pick up in the latter rounds, but definitely not the 3rd and maybe not the 4th either. Barring injury, this is a player who will primarily contribute on special teams while not only learning to re-adapt to playing football, but playing professional football after a year off.
ReplyDeleteI mean, yes, he's smart and would have been a high pick had he not forgo the draft, but he did understanding the consequences. Although he did manage to increase his 40 time, he still looked rather stiff in the drills at the NFL Combine. Obviously, there's only so much to take from the events at the NFL Combine, but it's what the evaluators have to go on besides old tape. He's just not a top 100 player for the G-Men.
if he was a top 100 player a year ago, he still is. its just a case of shaking off the rust; trainign camp and the like will do that and for the 1st season anyone drafted in the 4th won;t have a major role to play, nomatter what.
ReplyDeleteHe's not a third or fourth rounder . . . fifth or later.
