Much stuff to do this morning, but I'll be back at some point in the afternoon. The complete NFL schedule is coming out tonight at 7 p.m., so I'll be around by then to discuss the Giants' end of it.
Until then, you may discuss anything you wish. Like, did Rolando McClain have Crohn's disease or didn't he. He said he's battled it since high school, then took it back last week. Truth or ploy?
Enjoy.

Draft T-MINUS 2.42 Days away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteSPILLER SPILLER SPILLER!!
TRADE OSI OSI !!!!!!!!!!
LETS LIVE BLOG IT ERN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
CANT WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In a related note I saw an extended highlight clip of Spiller and was ready to ........ well lets just say I was quite excited.
ReplyDeleteOther words I heard Kiper (why all the hate for Mel? He knows his stuff and is hilarious in his detail and hair.): CJ Spiller ran behind a pretty bad OL and dominated, Team Leader, Always puts team first, scholar athlete, wears Warrick Dunn's # as a tribute to his OFF THE FIELD ACTIVITIES.
I am starting to think this is all for naught as he will go top seven. How could he not? He is too small? Come ON!
And Wayno's crush on Spiller continues...
ReplyDeleteI think McClain is trying to repair the damage done by his statement of Crohns.
I still am holding onto hope that Reese trades up and drafts Suh!
It would be awesome if the Giants got Suh, but at what price? It would have to be steep and however inept the Lions are I think the realize Osi would be completely lost in the 3-4.
ReplyDeleteDo the Lions run a 3-4? If so, Suh would be a wasted pick for them. I don't see him as either a 3-4 DE or DT. We have to save him.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking realistically for a second (sorry CE, it's time to cross Suh off your wish-list), my only concern is that if the Giants do draft Spiller, what do they do at the LB position?
ReplyDeleteGranted McClain or Weatherspoon probably would not be starting right away, but the Giants have no legit MLB. Reese, Fewell and Coughlin can talk all they want about Wilkinson and Goff, but does anybody really think this could be a championship team with either one of those two roaming the middle?
I'd say both players are average at best.
I have enough confidence in Reese that I know he's going to make a good, solid choice, whether that's Spiller, McClain, Pierre-Paul or somebody else, but until somebody tells me who's going to be playing MLB I'm not going to have much faith this team is going to go very far in the playoffs, if it can get there at all.
Any thoughts on what the Giants will do with the position?
Wayno - If Spiller is really all that, he will never last until 15. We know you like him. We've all gotten that message. Sit back, relax, and see what happens. The one thing I can guarantee will NOT happen is your six Spiller posts per day changing where he gets drafted. If the scouts agree with you, he's gone by 10. If they don't and he falls to the Giants, maybe he's not the miracle worker you assume him to be. I remember Reggie Bush getting even more pre-draft hype and he, clearly, is not worth his contract. Serviceable player, drafted WAY too early and paid WAY too much. Is Spiller the next Bush or the next Barry Sanders? Truth is, no one knows for sure. No matter how many posts you submit to say otherwise. Wanting it to be true doesn't make it true. I wanted Ron Dayne and Dave Brown to be great. As you well know, that didn't pan out the way any of us fans hoped it would.
ReplyDeleteDan, don't get me wrong, I am in total agreement with you. I worry about the MLB position as well. Reese did say that they have the pieces within the organization now that can take on the MLB role. We know that includes Goff, Wilkinson (sp?), and I heard even Sintim. Last year, he gave the fans the same vote of confidence about WR and then drafted a WR with his first pick. In other words, I am going with Dweez here, sitting back, relaxing and trusting in Reese's judgement. He has not exactly led us astray yet and I sure hope he doesn't in the future. And you even said you have confidence in him. I am intrigued to know what he will do. I HIGHLY doubt that he will trade up and draft Suh (the Husker in me would love it, but the Giants fan in me knows that it would destroy the rest of this year's draft). All I know is that I do not want Weatherspoon at 15 and I definitely do not want Pierre-Paul EVER! We have enough DEs who don't do well vs. the run (I am talking to you Osi). If anything, trading down right now makes a lot of sense, if McClain, Spiller, or a stud OT do not fall to 15.
ReplyDeleteAdrian Peterson was one of the great pro-style RB's I have EVER seen play college football. But a twisted ankle and a broken collarbone got him labeled soft. ahahha hahha hahaahah He shouldve been the top pick just as Spiller should be. Just because these overpaid group thinkers would pass Spiller by, doesnt mean he wont be all that. That was the stupidest logic I have ever seen u throw out on this board Dweez. Id expect it for Dan but you?
ReplyDeleteLastly, CJ Spiller is not Reggie Bush in terms of character (most importantly) and running style. Stop comparing them.
wayno, i dont get it, does kiper know his stuff or not?
ReplyDelete"Spiller to me is the all-purpose dynamo that a Reggie Bush (New Orleans Saints) was, that a Felix Jones (Dallas Cowboys) was," Kiper said. "He gives you so many dimensions and so much versatility as a runner, receiver, return man — not just a kickoff returner but a punt returner. To me, he can do all those things and give you that all-purpose yardage and be a great decoy when he's in the game just like Reggie Bush is at New Orleans.
To compare Spiller to Bush is a diservice. Spiller is much higher character, with much greater commitment and toughness than Hollywood Bush. He is not a decoy. I am not going to agree with everything Kiper says, I just don't hate on him like many like to.
ReplyDeleteHey, to switch topics real quick, anyone know anything about this linebacker from Penn St, Lee? I have seen him mentioned as a possible 2nd rounder. Could he be a consolation if we don't get McClain?
ReplyDeleteCJ Spiller reminds me of Leon Washington but with more speed and a better collegiate resume.
ReplyDeleteDan, the Giants seem to be in a nickel defense 50% of the time last year. If the status quo remains the same this year, the Giants could simply use a big SS (i.e. Chad Jones or Myron Rolle) in replacement of the Mike position in a nickel defense thus reducing the importance of a traditional MLB. Besides the obvious ineptitude at that position last year, the acquisition of Rolle may seem to indicate that S position will play a major role in Fewell's defense.
CE718, Sean Lee reminds me a lot like James Laurenitis. The guy has a real nose for the ball and always seem to be around the play as it's happening. He's definitely a lot more aggressive than McClain and possesses better tackling technique. The main issue with him is health which should scare most teams in particular Giant fans after witnessing a season decimated by injuries. No knock against Lee, but I'd prefer Jamar Chaney in round 3, or Sean Weatherspoon (should he still be available) in round 2.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info annonymous. I did hear that his injuries are now in the past and he is healthy. Hence, the reason I asked. So, there are at least consolation prizes for McClain in the early to mid rounds?
ReplyDeletewayno, you will be happy to know that via newsday the giants have called cj spiller and asked him for his draft day phone number. i still doubt he will be around at #15 though
ReplyDeleteOr, dare I raise Wayno's hopes, trade up a bit for him. Which, sorry Wayno, would be a bad move.
ReplyDeleteCE718, I guess that would depend if you think McClain is worth the 15th pick. I personally do not. If we're talking BPA, I'd rather CJ Spiller, Jason Pierre-Paul, Joe Haden, Dan Williams, or Dez Bryant in no particular order. If none of these players are available at 15, I'd rather move down and take my chances with either Earl Thomas, Sean Weatherspoon, Kyle Wilson, Jared Odrick, or Mike Iupati. Of course, there are more associated risks with moving down, so identifying specific/targeted players becomes more important. Don't want to trade down and miss out on anyone.

ReplyDeleteIt's unclear where running back C.J. Spiller will go in the draft. As he tells it, it's crystal clear that there's one place he'll never be going during his career -- to the principal's office.
Spiller told Dan Patrick earlier today that the Clemson product won't get in trouble at the next level.
"You should never hear my name in the news for anything negative," Spiller said.
If he lives up to the example of the man who has been his role model, we'll see Spiller's name in the news for plenty of positive stuff. He wears No. 28 in honor of Warrick Dunn.
Spiller is regarded as the top running back in the draft. The question is whether he's good enough to justify a top-ten selection.
Wayno, kind of reminds me of Dunn too.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, NO on Pierre-Paul. The dude will be a huge project. Yes, he is athletic and can rush the passer, but I do not want to waste the 15th pick on a one trick pony. And Earl Thomas has a chance to go top 15. McClain is the top MLB of this draft...period. That is why he is covetted by so many. In past drafts, he would not be top 15, but because this draft has few MLBs of that caliber, he is where he is.
To support CE718's argument, the exact quote from Jerry Reese when he was told that JPP did all those consecutive back flips: "We're looking for football players, not gymnasts".
ReplyDeleteWayno - My bad. I wasn't clear. What I meant by comparing Bush to Spiller was only about pre-draft hype. I haven't watched enough tape of Spiller to make any other comparison. As to your "overpaid group thinkers" comment, do some teams fit that label? Absolutely. Oakland and the Rams have been making ridiculously poor decisions for years. But to say that all 14 teams that draft before NY have no idea what they are doing, well, I have to disagree with you there. We'll know where Spiller lands on Thursday and we'll know his TRUE value in a couple of years. Lastly, as for AP dropping down the draft board, let's not forget Minnesota might have a Lombardi right now if he could hold onto the football. His raw talent is undeniable, but I prefer RBs that don't cough off my team's chances at a Super Bowl. I'm old fashioned that way.
ReplyDeleteCE718, Jason Pierre-Paul is just 1 out of a few options cited. Generally speaking, we don't need a DE or a RB for that matter, but if we're talking BPA, Jason Pierre-Paul is the highest ranked DE following Derrick Morgan. At 6-5 and 270 lbs, this guy moves like a linebacker. And judging by his 40 time, he's just as fast or faster than a lot of the inside linebackers in this draft. I mean, yeah, he's still raw, but he's far from a one trick pony. Actually, he offers a lot more upside than a number of players who may still be available by the time the Giants make their selection including McClain and Morgan.
ReplyDeleteEd Valentine just broke this on his blog:
ReplyDelete"As the hours tick down until the NFL Draft officially begins, the rumor mill is -- of course -- in high gear. Here is what I can tell you right now in regards to our New York Giants.
The biggest topic of conversation, as you might expect, is whether or not the Giants will move Osi Umenyiora.
One source told me today that the latest possibility is Osi to Jacksonville as part of a package that would get the Giants to the 10 spot in the first round. That same source tells me the Giants would take whichever of Rolando McClain, C.J. Spiller or Jason Pierre-Paul is still on the board at that point.
And yes, like it or not I have had three independent source tell me JPP is very much on the Giants' radar."
Lou, it's not whichever. If the Giants trade Osi to move up in the draft, they will do so with the intention of drafting Jason Pierre-Paul. Tom Coughlin has already taken the time out to personally evaluate him in order to dissect talent from hype.
ReplyDeleteMy biggest fear is that Pierre-Paul will be weak vs. the run and we will then have another Osi on our hands. I would rather someone more polished at 15. JPP may be on the radar, but so are a lot of other guys.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, a uconn fan just told me that JPP got run all over against them this year. That is scary.
ReplyDeleteCE718, you do realize that whomever is drafted by the Giants regardless of position is not starting from day one, and may not start at all this year?
ReplyDeleteYou know, anonymous, that with the right player drafted, that person has the potential to be an impact player, starter or not. I do not see JPP as an impact player this year. Nicks was last year, Phillips was. And they were not picked as high as 15. McClain, Spiller these two are polished and can have impact this year.
ReplyDeleteCJ SPILLER ON ESPN NEWS 4:50!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteBoys,
ReplyDeleteThese are the smoke screen's that go up every draft. CJ's number, we want PP, etc.
Don't be suprised if they go for a name that is rarely mentioned around here. An offensive lineman perhaps? The draft is all about not showing your hand and trying to get teams off your trail.
The more I think about this, the more I think that's how it plays out. You can find RB's and LB's in lower rounds.
But have fun.....
Chris B.
Looks like the Giants schedule is out
ReplyDeleteSecond game is Manning Bowl 2

Chris B - I agree. The only time you hear more lies than before the draft is before an election. Giants are especially known for misdirection ploys. How many guys have come to the Stadium over the years to get completely passed over when the Giants have the pick? Jerry likes his poker!
ReplyDeleteI'm with you all the way Dweez....
