No. 53

That's the number Keith Bulluck has been assigned. Used to belong to a fellow named Harry Carson, whose bust you can see in the Hall of Fame in Canton.

Don't read a great deal into that. Not that Bulluck isn't a great player, but the last guy to wear 53 was rookie MLB Phillip Dillard, who will now be re-assigned another number. Bulluck wore 53 with the Titans, so he really hasn't ventured too far from home, right?

  1. That's his # but isn't it time the Giants retired it?

  2. i was just thinking the same thing. That's a number that the Giants should retire.

  3. Guys - how can they retire all the numbers WE want them to retire? Unless they move into the 100's, numbers just can't be retired anylonger for our Giants. And...suppose the NFL goes to an 18 game schedule with a 60-70 player sqaud??????

  4. I hate retiring numbers for everybody. Seeing players wear the numbers of the all-time greats reminds me of the all-time greats.

  5. I think if the guy is a HOFer, the number should be retired. Yeah, the Giants have been in the League forever and, yeah, eventually numbers will get tight. But for now, there are still plenty of numbers available, so the great ones should have that honor. If and when numbers get tight, maybe have the retired number enter back into the system after 40 years and/or upon that player's death. I will always remember "53" as Carson, but it will not have that meaning for my kids. Carson deserved the honor because he was a great, stayed when the team was miserable, and, you could argue, was one of the factors, along with Rozelle, to get the Maras to stop the constant infighting and bring the team back to it's long overdue prominence. "53" should NOT be on Bullock's back - or anyone else's. That jersey should only have the name "CARSON" stitched on it.

  6. And Harry Carson is not some other player. As Dweez says he is a HOF and the second best LB and 3rd best defensive player in Giants history behind Taylor and Strahan. 56, 92 and 53 should never be worn again.

  7. Hey, Ern. How about a Umenyoura hip update. I am ready to tear into this jack ass.

  8. Harry Carson's jersey should certainly be retired.

As for whether he's the 3rd best defensive player ever for the Giants; perhaps but there are some others who would get my vote as well.

    Emlen Tunnell, Andy Robustelli, and
    Sam Huff.

  9. Huff and Robustelli are nostalgia. Harry Carson year in year out was one of the best LB in the league for 12+ years and was only overshadowed because he played on the same D as the greatest defensive player of all time.
