Jones' Spot Filled

The Giants figured out what to do with third-round safety Chad Jones' roster spot. They picked up Eagles defensive lineman Alex Hall off waivers today.

Jones was waived, with the intention of placing him on the non-football injury list. That means the Giants won't be obliged to pay his salary, though he does get to keep his $850,000 signing bonus.

As for the 6-2, 250-pound Hall, he went to Philadelphia from Cleveland, where he was a seventh-round pick in 2008, when the Eagles traded cornerback Sheldon Brown. The Eagles later decided he was probably better suited to play an outside linebacker spot in a 3-4 defense than defensive end in the Eagles' 4-3. The Giants, of course, play a 4-3 base.

Hall had three sacks with Cleveland in 2008, and could be used in pass rush situations here. If he makes the squad at all, that is.

  1. OH GOOD, because what we really need is more bodies on the D-line.

  2. Actually the Giants do because their slime SUCKED last year if u watched. Hall is a great young talent and the centerpiece of the Sheldon brown trade and more important than the picks. The Browns were high on him and the Eagles inexplicably cut him. I was hoping for this, GREAT JOB JERRY!

  3. Not if he makes it onto the field before JJP...

  4. Last season the giants kept Penn stater Maurice Evans on the practice squad only to have him plucked away by TB. Now we are adding yet another DE, to a crowded line situation. A few things come to mind; 1 Osi's hip is bad enough that they need to have a body in camp to work against the Oline, 2 JPP is nowhere close to signing and 3 the Eagles are stacked on D. They must love their pick from Clemson in order to cut a proven player like Hall who has talent and can play in the NFL

  5. In addition to all of the above, the Giants need to have enough bodies to account for injuries that may occur during training camp including pre-season games.

The last thing you want to have happen is an injury to a main player with no adequate replacement on the roster.

  6. The Eagles are probably more in love with Brandon Graham, the #13 pick from Mich who was signed today. This means that all of their picks are going to in camp and on time. They've revamped the entire WR core, TE, QB, RB and most of the defense in span of 2 years. Amazing. and they had just a ton of picks in the draft as well...say what you want, but this is one well run organization

  7. Not mentioned as much, but the DTs were far more miserable last year than the DEs. No push in the middle = no sacks for the ends.
