No Power

I don't generally get bent all out of shape over a publication's power rankings during the season. And the occasional offseason power rankings rankle me even less because, let's face it, who knows how much of an impact any draft pick will make.

But ESPN's just-released rankings might raise a Giant eyebrow or two. Tom Coughlin's group is rated 17th, the lower half of the league. That's based on what many consider a less-than-ostentatious draft and a free agent period that saw them add just two safeties -- albeit good ones in Antrel Rolle and Deon Grant -- and a backup quarterback in Jim Sorgi.

What may rankle even further is that those rankings rate the Jets eighth.

Now, I know all you guys are a placid, agreeable group that generally goes along unquestioningly with accepted philosophy (too sarcastic?), but I thought you might appreciate an opportunity to have your own say.

So have at it. The floor is open.

  1. the worst we are ranked the better we will be. nothing wrong with a little bulletin board material to get these guys to work even harder in the off season

  2. Honestly, after the terrible finish to last season, there isn't a lot we can say.

  3. Looks like it's time to shut up and play.

    Worked pretty good last time.

  4. P.S. For what it's worth, they moved the Giants up 3 spots from 20th coming off of week 17 last year.

  5. agree with everyone. this team does have things to prove and the Jets should be ranked above us, if i recall correctly one team was in the AFC Championship game while another finished the season with a series of humiliating losses.

  6. As fans who cares, those ESPN know next to nothing, I think last year they were rated in the top 5 and look how that turned out.

As a player or coach I would hope they use it as a "Us against the World" theme.

  7. ESPN? The company that always had the Eagles winning it all? Okay haha.

But I agree with Joe and that's basically how they're doing the ratings. Jets (yuck) did have a better season, which is why they're drinking the lime kool-aid.

  8. The Jets should be ranked even higher. They have a great coach, went to the AFC Championship game and re-tooled to make them even better on both sides of the ball.

On the other hand the GIants had THE WORST DEFENSE I have EVER seen in the NFL! Hyperbole? I think not, just remember weeks 6 thru 17.

  9. yea i was kind of shocked to find out we had the best 8th offense and yet didnt make the playoffs... that some bad defense.. hopefully it is fixed up

  10. Osi said if they don't move the Giants up to the number one spot than he's going to retire....

  11. I just did some quick research. Guess who was the 17th team on ESPN's 2007 preseason power rankings? It is a sign.

  12. i do think the ratings are kinda silly. However, i do actually like them. in recent times, we have played best with a chip on our shoulder. this should make that chip seem awful big.

  13. LOL at Anonymous about Osi.,....

  14. Another "expert" heard from. His qualifications to render an opinion are worse then mine by a lot. If our D is improved and I think it will be we will see how he rates us as the season goes on.

  15. did the giants cut danny clark, is the person who posted on previous article wrong?

  16. We didn't play well at the end of the year, but we beat the Cowgirls twice:) As far as the Jets go, I don't call the offense an upgrade if you let Thomas Jones and Leon Washington go, and sign Ladamian T.(spelling?)

  17. The year we won the Super Bowl, what was our rank...Bib Blue will come storming back in 2010!

  18. That ranking is by Clayton. He always rates the Giants low. I am surprised he rates them that high. However, It's all good, let them all sleep on the Giants. We like it that way. Hope Hanlon gets it up on the board.

  19. First, the Jets wouldn't have even made the playoffs if the Colts didn't throw their game against them. Let's all remember that. Second, it's ESPN, which is a division of Walt Disney. Disney has one qualification you MUST meet in order to work for them - you have to work for lowest possible dollar amount. It shows in every ESPN broadcast and publication. Third, no NFL team has ever made the playoffs on the basis on how ESPN, or any sports entertainment group, ranked them. Thankfully, that still has to be proven on the field. Let's get summer over with already and play some football!!! Go Big Blue!!!

  20. Am I the only one who puts all of his sports stock into ESPN? Come on everyone, everything ESPN broadcasts is total and complete fact. With the wonderful analysis by Berman, Keyshawn, Brown, et al, how can you guys think that ESPN does not put the best sports product out there?

Hope you all realize that I was being overly sarcastic and I believe ESPN to be overrated. I trust my 5 year old niece's opinion of the Giants more than ESPN. All together, I no longer watch any pre-game shows: ESPN, Fox, CBS. They are all full of you know what. I do not need some ex-football player or coach or analyst to tell me what I already know and/or over-hype players and coaches. Analysts have their their lips glued to the backs of so many players who do not deserve it (i.e. Romo, the rest of the Cowboys, the entire Patriots team) and I cannot stand it anymore. I turn on the games when they start. Ernie, one of the reasons I turn to your blog for the news. I only care about what the Giants are doing and you clue us in before espn or other sites do. So, thank you for saving me from having to go there.

  21. Who cares what ESPN ranks whatever BEFORE a season?

I rank John Clayton as the only survivor from the Roswell crash in 1947.

the end of the year ranking means more than a May 4th non-story.

Last I looked the season starts in September.

Let the games begin Ernie, I can't wait!

  22. Hell what does ESPN knows? Someone said lets play the game. OH, yes Shaun Ohara and you saw what happen.
Well we are coming back with full force and they better get the hell out of the way.
They will do what they have to do to make us happy.
Just make the Playoff and then we will see what happens. Shades of 2007.
I can wait for the 2nd game of this season Brother versus Brother.
ESPN? what do they know about Giants Football. Hell nothing (What a draft) thank you J.R.

  23. This is all nothing, there isnt any possible way for anyone to know where any team is ranked. No one and I mean no one can predict the future. This chart is based on opinions and stats. Yes I agree the Giants defense was horrible last season but the they'll be a top 3 team from week 1 to week 17 and top it off with a SB win in Dallas' stadium while Jerry Jones cries in a blanket

  24. With an untested QB, the Eagles are much too high. The Redskins, on the other hand are a bit low, with a good defense plus McNabb. The Steelers are much too low--Ben is a good QB, but he is not nearly as important as McNabb is to the Eagles. Bengals, Falcons, and 49ers are sleepers of sorts, but I think they are rated too high. The Cardinals, with an untested QB, are rated much too highly. Dallas, with their OL problems are a bit too high. I would peg the Giants around 8th with a good chance to move up and stay in the top 5.

  25. Giants please utilize the young LBs you've assembled. I can make it through a year of rebuilding the defense if we can get them to a place where they're dominant.

LBs of the future; Sintim, Dillard, Adrian Tracy, Micah Johnson, Jonathan Goff and Lee Campbell.

  26. I like reading power ranking articles (I'm one of those people), but luckily I realize they don't mean anything.

Basically they're based off of last year's end-of-year results, so it's not that big a deal. ESPN and those sites don't get too creative with the rankings or preseason predictions. They all have their one or two sleeper teams (the same ones).

I'm sure the 49ers/Bengals/Chicago and probably a few others might be in the running. They'll all have their same favorites Pats/Colts/Saints/Cowboys/Eagles. Normally Pitt and San Diego would be in the mix, but I think without LT and with the Ben situation, those two teams might not be liked as much by ESPN.

SI is the only one that goes completely crazy with its picks, and I don't believe they've gotten one right yet. They'll probably have a Rams-Raiders Super Bowl prediction this year.

Here's my prediction of ESPNs Super Bowl prediction: Cowboys over Jets.
