Just Guessing Here

Welcome to Draft Week. The picking starts Thursday at 7:30 p.m., but we'll undoubtedly be talking draft right up to then.

Remember, all lines are open for opinions about any prospects or moves here. For myself -- and you may feel free to agree or disagree here -- but I don't think the Giants are going to do anything major before Roger Goodell reads that first name. And I believe Osi Umenyiora, as well as any other rostered veteran, remains as he was before the draft -- a Giant.

Just from the vibe I got from Jerry Reese last week, he seemed contented with having seven draft picks, one in each round. And unless there's someone that they've fallen head-over-heels in love with who's worth trading up a couple of spots from No. 15, I predict we won't see much movement from the Giants.

That said, watch Reese turn the whole thing on its ear by trading Osi and his No. 2 for a slew of extra picks. But that's the draft. Anything can happen. I just don't think anything will.

  1. I'd like to thank the NFL for ruining Draft Weekend for me and (I suspect) millions of other people by being as greedy and un-fan-friendly as possible and moving it to a work night.

Used to be my friends and I would get together Saturday afternoon, talk football all day and root on the Giants picks - a small, fun dose of football in April. Now, I probably won't even bother as I have to get to bed early for work.

This stupid, greedy move combined with the utterly unnecessary new Giants Stadium and it's obscene seat licensing structure has dampened my enthusiasm for the NFL. At least until September.

  2. It's not just the NFL, but you're right. It is out of greed. If you live in the northeast, you get screwed with late times for everything worth watching. God forbid they leave something like the draft on a Saturday afternoon. No, we've got to get the west coast into prime time.

  3. I LOVE the prime time first round. The last thing I want to do is sit around all saturday.

    T-Minus 3.35 days!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. I agree with what both of you said about the stupidity and greed shown by the NFL in moving the draft to Thursday, however, the west coast gets screwed over as well.

While east coast people might not be able to watch the whole thing, the west coast audience are still filing out of work when the first pick is made. It's 7:30 our time, but 4:30 theirs.

And Friday is even worse for the left coast. So, while I agree that this is such a greedy move by the NFL, I disagree that it was made with the west coast in mind. While they may see picks 10 through 32 in prime time, they miss at least the first few picks.

I know I, and I suspect most fans watch the first few picks, then switch back and forth keeping an eye on their division teams, while they wait for their team to pick.

  5. Guys, just do what you normally do on a Thursday nite and use your phone to keep yourself updated. I could see this being a problem 10 years ago, but there's no need to be tied to the tube any longer. If you're hardcore, use the DVR. Personally, I found the "experts" such an annoyance and such bores, I haven't watched the actual broadcast in about four years. Quick check of NFL.com every 30 minutes or so and I'm good to go.

  6. Uh... You're completely missing the point. The idea is that I (and all my friends) actually WANT to watch it live. Talking heads and all. If I wanted to stream it to my phone, I wouldn't care about this move.

  7. While it may annoy some fans, this is good business by the NFL & ESPN. They will pull in a lot more in advertising revenue running in prime time than they would running over the weekend.

  8. When they can make a prime time event out of announcing the NFL schedule, you know the NFL is all powerful. I guess we contribute to it, by watching all this stuff.

The thing I don't like is that this draft format seems like it would help the teams that aren't as skillful in the draft process and hurts teams that are currently good at the draft process. The less skillful teams get to mull over their decisions overnight, then come back the next day and start over. I think that levels the playing field somewhat, so that the teams that come into the draft better prepared aren't as able to take advantage of that preparedness. Kind of like taking a test in 2 parts. Easier to prepare for.

  9. Ernie - any chance the G-men trade down a little to grab an extra pick and then get MLB Weatherspoon in the 20s?
