Looks like the Giants are truly hedging their bets against Kenny Phillips not returning to full strength from his microfracture surgery of last season. They're hosting Seahawks safety Deon Grant, and reports are they could sign him as early as tomorrow.
Grant can cover people, as his 26 career interceptions indicate. That's a quality C.C. Brown, Michael Johnson, and Aaron Rouse showed precious little of last year. Now, with Antrel Rolle in one starting role, the Giants are reluctant, to say the least, to give over the other spot to Johnson if Phillips can't get back enough strength and mobility to be effective. Thus the interest in Grant.
If they do sign Grant, the acquisition definitely will allow them to go either middle linebacker, defensive front, or offensive front in the draft. Or maybe even Clemson running back C.J. Spiller, who rocketed up the draft boards with his recent workouts. The Giants are said to have great interest in him, but they're also believed to be taking close looks at Alabama LB Rolando McClain, Texas CB Earl Thomas and Rutgers T Anthony Davis, among others.
