Taken For Grant-ed

Looks like the Giants are truly hedging their bets against Kenny Phillips not returning to full strength from his microfracture surgery of last season. They're hosting Seahawks safety Deon Grant, and reports are they could sign him as early as tomorrow.

Grant can cover people, as his 26 career interceptions indicate. That's a quality C.C. Brown, Michael Johnson, and Aaron Rouse showed precious little of last year. Now, with Antrel Rolle in one starting role, the Giants are reluctant, to say the least, to give over the other spot to Johnson if Phillips can't get back enough strength and mobility to be effective. Thus the interest in Grant.

If they do sign Grant, the acquisition definitely will allow them to go either middle linebacker, defensive front, or offensive front in the draft. Or maybe even Clemson running back C.J. Spiller, who rocketed up the draft boards with his recent workouts. The Giants are said to have great interest in him, but they're also believed to be taking close looks at Alabama LB Rolando McClain, Texas CB Earl Thomas and Rutgers T Anthony Davis, among others.

  2. He played safety last year, but he's projected as the second-best cornerback in the draft. Thomas says he can play any position, be it corner, free, strong, or slot, so he's kind of an all-around guy.

  3. And that is a reason why Reese should consider Thomas, if he falls to #15. Could make the need for someone like Grant null and void. Thomas could be a real asset to our secondary. That is not to say that Thomas will be the pick, I am simply stating the Giants should definitely give him full consideration.

  4. A 4.35 to 4.37 forty pretty much guarantees that Earl Thomas will not be available by the time the Giants select their 1st round pick. Nonetheless, adding Grant would pretty much lead to the dismissal of the remaining non-cover safeties currently on the roster. Can't say that I saw this coming, but great move if Grant indeed signs with the Giants.

  5. Yeah but did any of you catch Earl Thomas pull his hamstring yesterday while running his 40 at his pro day. Funny as I watched it on NFL Total Access they showed the video but didnt even mention it.

  7. Interesting signing....

I really hope KP comes back. He was such an exciting young talent that I thought would be a pro bowler for years to come.

  8. I'm as thrilled with the Grant signing as I am that the Giants withdrew their tender from CC.
