AP On The Radio

Thought I'd pass along Antonio Pierce's WFAN interview, which is pretty interesting. Francesa tried to goad him into calling out defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan, but Pierce wouldn't take the bait. Not directly, at least. But he did say the team was having problems with the Xs and Os, which is basically the coaching area.

Certainly worth a listen.

  1. Look, what is he suppose to say. The defense is suffering on many fronts.

Firstly, injuries have killed it. Losing Kenny Phillips was obviously devestating as there was no depth behind him. Secondly, the plan was for Canty, Boley, and Ross to start. Losing four starters from any unit is going to hurt any football team, that's the reality. However, the second issue and more troubling one, is the lack of effort. Where was the pride? They didn't stop anything against the Eagles. They are obviously highly de-moitivated as the sub's are not getting it done. When everyone is healthy and they can put on a full compliment of capable players the defense will be back. The only issue is if that will happen before the season is lost!

Any good team is going to expose the weaknesses. As long as they have slow LB's and Safeties that can't cover, they are going to be in trouble. I don't care what anyone says, that's the reality guys. AP knows it and we all know it too.

  2. Same guy commenting here....

However, I'm much more worried about our offense. We have everyone healthy and it looks a mess! Eli looks absolutely lost. I agree with Peter King of SI - he was the goat this week. Everyone in Giant land gives Eli a pass because of 07 and the fact he goes into these funks every now and again. However, he has been in this league too long to be making decisions like he is. Eli put the defense in terrible positions last week.

Our offense looks dazed and confused right now. This is the unit that has to be better for this team to get a few wins against quality opponents. They have to have long and successful drives. Establish the run, even with eight in the box - that's Giant Football! Do some play action, run some screens,go to Boss, and grind it out. However, don't try to make Eli be like Payton. He isn't. He is successful when things are simplified and he focuses on execution!!! Gilbrinde coaches, Eli QB's....don't force him into doing all these reads and changing plays at the line. It simply isn't working!

  3. What do you want the offense to do? They've been down double digit point in the first few minutes of two of the last three games. If the defense can make one stop maybe Eli and the Giants wouldn't think they need to score on every possession.

Didn't both the Saints and Eagles score on six of their first seven possessions? What's an offense to do? The linebackers they have are awful and CC Brown can't cover. It's like they're playing with seven guys on defense.

Oh and Bill Sheridan sucks. On the toucdown right by that no name fullback in the second half of the Eagles game on 3rd and 1 anyone know why Osi was playing so far outside the tackle you couldn't even see him on the screen? Someone remind him he needs to play the run as well.

And why could the Eagles run right up the middle on the defense? Where were the linebackers? Ernie do you know who was supposed to be filling those gaps? Darryl made a comment on one of the long runs of how Tuck almost had Weaver at the line. But Tuck had to spring down from the end of the line. There was not one Giants anywhere in the gap.

And I agree with what Coughlin and others have said: Where's the resiliency? You just allowed a divisional opponent to score 40 on you. And they're laughing on the sideline. Get pissed off. Hit somebody. I know Eli had a bad game and the Giants turned the ball over, but every time the opponent gets in the red zone do we have to give up a touchdown? Why not trying holding them or god forbid get a turnover ourselves.

Sorry for the long comment, just needed to vent.

  4. Osi and Kiwi are playing more like situational players, one dimensional. Canty will help.

  5. Ernie please ask coach Coughlin the following: do they plan to address the safety issue possibly by converting on of the CBs?
Who actually sits upstairs and relays plays for the giants offense?
Will they bring in a kicker, CFL season is winding down bring in one of these guys.

  6. I've maintained for years that the LB is a weak area that is addressed in the draft with poor results. When was the last time we drafted a LB who became a bona fide starter (not one by default). CLint Sintim is a 2nd round pick, and injuries aside, has it ever appeared that he was going to start for this team? Why is that? We've drafted Kehl, Goff, Wilkerson and now Sintim and non of them are starters. That's a lot of draft picks to come up empty with..

  7. A lot of good points made here by 'what's his name?'. But the what about the O line not getting it done either!?!? It looks clear that the football minds that study tape have figured out how to stop the G running attack, and cover the young untested receiving corps, then get after Manning. If the runners don't run-- largely cuz they have nowhere to go-- and the receivers aren't open (ok, not always the case), Manning's gonna get hit. And that has always been a big problem.
