Eli and Jim

Eli Manning is out for the Pittsburgh game after Monday's head gash, but primary backup Jim Sorgi will miss even more time with his sore shoulder.

Sorgi is expected to miss two to three weeks, according to Mikey G.'s spies. An MRI revealed damage to the joint that was not related to the torn labrum the Giants knew he had when he signed in the offseason. He can thank Jets LB Lance Laury for that, as Laury caused the injury when he hit Sorgi while delivering his second touchdown pass to Victor Cruz.

With only Rhett Bomar left on the depth chart, the Giants re-stocked that spot by signing Holy Cross quarterback Dominic Randolph. Injured TE Jake Ballard was waived to create the roster spot.

  1. I was wondering who they cut. Ballard it is, no room for him with Bear locking up a spot.

Sorgi was a bad signing from the beginning and I would hope if Bomar plays well enough the Giants will cut Sorgi. When ur QB is a Manning u only need one backup and one practice squad guy. It's not like if Manning does get injured Sorgi could do anything with the team. Sorgi's gameday spot should be used on an extra kicker or an extra WR or LB to play ST.

  2. Yeah I agree, they should of never signed Sorgi. They would've been better off with keeping Carr, its not like hes going to start for the 9'ers anyway.

  3. Dominick, Carr has a better shot at starting on the 9ers than the Giants. I am actually rooting for him to take over, always liked Carr.

Agree with both of you, signing Sorgi has been a mistake since day 1. As I said in a previous post, Bomar did look fairly good in the game vs. the Jets.

  4. Ralphie V tweets: Confirmed: QB Jim Sorgi out 2-3 weeks. Source says he has a torn capsule in his shoulder and partial dislocation in his right shoulder. #NYG

Are there any experienced FA QB's out there worth a look?

  5. Jeff Garcia just signed with a UFL team but I still think it should be Bomar and Eli and Randolph or somebody ellse worthy of practice squad. Eli never misses a game and ur team is screwed if the starter goes down so u might as well invest in other areas like ST.

  6. Woah woah, Carr was the most overpaid backup QB in the league. It wasn't worth it to keep him when Manning (being a Manning), isn't going to miss a game.
I never liked the Sorgi signing either though. He's never really proven himself to even be a reliable backup. Let's just carry 2 again, Eli and Bomar.

....or we could bring back Andre Woodson from the UFL = P

  9. I guess I don't understand. How could the signing of Sorgi be a mistake? David Carr wanted to leave and compete for a legitimate chance to start again. Wasn't going to happen in NY which left Bomar as the only other option at the position. Obviously, you hope things work out as planned, but we've all witnessed how the Woodson experiment pan out. The Giants couldn't leave the backup QB position to chance, so they made a modest signing with Sorgi to serve as an insurance policy. Smart move.

Now from only 1 game, it seems so far that the Bomar experiment is light years ahead of what the Woodson experiment ever came to be. If he continues to impress, then the Giants have a really good problem on their hands. They can either cut Sorgi and have Bomar as the official backup for Manning for years to come, or just wait and see what offers come in from needy QB teams such as the Bills. Either way, the Giants win.

  10. Haj - It was a mistake because Marc Bulger was available. The whole League knew he was going to get cut. Please don't bother running his recent stats, they were miserable. The obvious reason for that was he was on the Rams. Give Bulger NY's O line (which isn't great, but cardboard boxes are better than the Rams O line) and NY's WRs and Bulger could have kept NY in playoff contention while Eli heals (if, God Forbid, Eli went down in the regular season). The knock on Bulger is he could never stay healthy for a whole season (except his All Pro ones). Which kinda makes him a perfect backup to Eli, since Eli never misses a game and, if he did, he would be back in a hurry. Much like Carr, he's loking to redeem himself. Unlike Carr, he had several monster seasons. Baltimore got themselves a steal when they picked him up.

  11. If they were gonna sign Sorgi they might as well signed me because I come cheaper and have the same ability to win football games.

  12. Wayno - And don't forget, you're a better interview, as well. The press boys would have LOVED having you in the locker room.

  13. Actually dweez115, Bulger only became available after asking the Rams to release him. The Rams actually wanted to keep Bulger and have him serve as a mentor to Bradford. Nonetheless, the Giants signed Sorgi prior to Bulger's release. In hindsight, I guess it would be easy for everyone to agree to wait for Bulger's release, but the Giants clearly best managed the situation based off of the information that they had at the time. At the same time, available or not, the Giants were not going to sign Bulger or any backup QB to a $3 million dollar contract.

  14. Haj - It's not just about Bulger; its also about Ramsey, Garcia and a dozen others. There are proven Vets who have SEEN THE FIELD who could have been brought in as Eli's backup. Now Mannings never injure, so it's prob all moot, but you at least want a backup who can play when called upon. Sorgi hasn't looked good in the few times he saw the field in Indy. I think it was just a "cute" idea to bring him from one manning to another.

The plus side of all of this, is that Bomar will get a real test and once Randolph steps in he'll be handing off A LOT; so we'll get to see what Brown, Ware and Johnson can really do.

  15. What! Are you referring to the same Patrick Ramsey that was the 3rd string QB for the Titans a couple of years ago? And Garcia, who's 40 by the way, and whom has been coincidentally passed up by every other NFL team? (I don't really think this is a coincidence.)

I agree, the Giants need an adequate backup for Manning. They were lucky with Carr and they've taken the initiative to try and develop an in-house prospect. Unfortunately, Lorenzen and Woodson were complete failures, but Bomar provides a glimmer of hope. And hopefully he can continue to improve and learn from Manning, and the Giants can avoid the typical eco-friendly move of recycling 'the never good enough' QB's of the NFL.

  16. I'm all for Bomar, but if Sorgi returns, Bomar gets bumped to 3 and the Giants only carry 2 QBs over the past few years. Point being, if you're gonna go with a Vet backup over a rookie/2nd year guy, then get a field tested and proven Vet.

  17. Haj - Bulger was set to make 8.5 million with the Rams. Not even my nine year old believes that the Rams wanted him to stay. They only said that in the hope of getting a pick for him before they had to release him. Common NFL practice to pretend you want a guy that everyone knows you really don't. Yes, he was released after Sorgi got signed. That's 100% true. That's why you sign a stiff like Sorgi to a contract with no guaranteed money, so you cut him when someone better shows up. Who else was rushing to sign Sorgi? Not like the guy was in high demand. As for the 3.5 million, call me crazy but if I just built a billion and a half plus stadium and signed my QB to one of the richest contracts in the NFL, I wouldn't think twice about 3.5 million to make sure my season didn't go down the toilet if my starting QB got hurt. They would make that money back and then some with the first playoff game. This is a classic example of why I like Jerry Reese, but I don't LOVE Jerry Reese. Sometimes, I feel like he does what's easy rather than what's really smart.

  18. Here's the thing, ggggg-men. If Bomar continues to improve, the Giants will not be able to send him back to the practice squad as he surely could be plucked away by a QB needy team for nothing. That's not going to happen. They will either keep 3 QB's (not likely), keep Sorgi and get a draft pick for Bomar, or keep Bomar and send Sorgi packing.

And dweez115, I'm with you. As a fan, I wouldn't want to see the season thrown away just because of an injury to Manning, but really, what teams could essentially survive the loss of their starting QB. The Patriots proved they could not (although they came close), the Colts wouldn't even be a playoff caliber team, and even the Texans proved that life is better w/ Schaub than it is w/o.

Ideally, the perfect scenario (hypothetically speaking) is one where you have Favre starting and Rodgers as your backup. That just doesn't exist today. There's a salary cap and 53 players to account for it.

  19. I think this backup QB thing is a little ridiculous. There's a reason these guys are backups. And you know what's funny, the other day I saw a clip of the Indy game and its backup (Painter?) was playing, and the announcer said something to the effect, of, "Man, wouldn't it be nice for Colts fans to have Sorgi back in there."

And these guys you're talking about stink. Ramsey? Just because they started at some point doesn't mean they should have started at all. Garcia? When's the last time he played in a game? The guy's 40. Eli doesn't need a mentor. That's for the Jets and Sanchez or the Rams and Bradford to have.

And Bulger? Really? He stinks to. He hasn't had a good year in probably five years. And we all say how nice a backup Carr was, but he can't even crack the starting job on a team with no starting QB (sorry, Alex Smith isn't a starter). So, I think this is all a little crazy. If your starter goes down, no matter the team, it will negatively effect you, ie more losses.

  20. Haj - "what teams could essentially survive the loss of their starting QB?"

Answer: The 1990 New York Giants = )

  21. Haj - I hear you, but remember this year is unique. No salary cap.

Dan - Bulger played for the Rams. No one short of God could have decent stats for the Rams. Obviously, I can't prove it, unless Flacco goes down this season. But I firmly believe Bulger could easily manage the Ravens (or the Giants if NY had him) for a three to four game stretch and keep the team competitive throughout. Do I think he could cover an entire season? Nope. But if two or three games allowing Eli to heal (Again, we are all in agreement that the best thing is that he NOT get hurt, no matter who is behind him) is the difference between the playoffs and picking 15 again, I would put my money on Bulger over Sorgi anyday of the week.
