The Running Backs

Aside from nearly knocking his quarterback into next week (totally not Brandon Jacobs' fault, by the way), do you think Jacobs looked like he was over his problems from last year? I thought he showed some power, which is a good sign.

No need to talk about Ahmad Bradshaw. That 36-yard run of his showed exactly what he's capable of. Classic Bradshaw cut. But what about DJ Ware and Andre Brown. Of the two, which would you take to serve as the third running back? And did anything Monday night indicate to you that this year's ground game will be more effective than last year's?

The floor is open.

  1. i was pretty unimpressed with the running game, looked a lot like years to me. but to be fair the jets defense is made to stop the run and dare you to throw. i dont know right now i'm skeptical of the big guys on both lines of scrimmage

  2. The Jets are tough to run on, but the Giants eventually exploited their run stacking with Cruz. That said, they weren't overly impressive, but it's early.

  3. Running game grades
OL C- :Not enough push especially in short yardage. 3 tries to get BJ into the end zone. Is this line old and not good anymore???
BJ B- :Showed power in his limited action but still appeared to run too high
AB A :Welcome back AB of the Super Bowl run? Sure looked like it with a burst he was lacking last year.
DJ Ware F : Whether he calls himself Danny or DJ nothing hides the stink of his game. Slow with no cutting ability does not make an NFL RB or kick returner
Andre Brown D : Where was the cutting ability Ed and the Albany amigos have been talking about? Another lumbering RB who can't effectively cover or return kicks is not needed.
Gartrell Johnson Inc: 3 carries is not enough. Showed speed that is sorely lacking on this unit and needs more touches to see if Reese needs to scour the waiver wire for an RB who can play special teams and doesnt run a 4.7 40.

  4. One last running game grade
TE- Bear Pascoe B+: Looks like Bear can really block. Showed some good sealing and looked the part. Call me impressed, there may be a role in the Giant offense for this cowboy.

  5. Wow, Wayno gave a non-starting player a compliment! About time you caught up with the rest of us on the Bear wagon.

  6. With 2 5th's of the O-Line out of the game, it's really hard to gauge the rushing attack. And against an aggressive and attacking defense like the Jets, speed and shiftiness is probably the best counter which would mean exclusively using Bradshaw as the main back with Jacobs to add the finishing touch.

It will be very interesting to see what they can do against the defense of Pittsburgh.

  7. I disagree 100% with the above assessment of Ware. He had no opportunity to do anything but showed some quickness to the line and an ability to cut in heavy traffic. I question his work ethic and toughness, but as a running back he looked better than Andre Brown. And Andre Brown will never play in this league if he doesn't learn how to block. He is simply the worst blocking running back I have ever seen in my life. Completely useless on passing downs.

  9. Jacobs looked really slow as last year...got to wonder if he's never going to return his former self.

Bradshaw is his usual self but is a he a every down back? I love the guy but can his running style last an entire season?

As for the rest of the guys nothing special but that's still a wait and see.

Overall the line was beat up and guys were missing so gotta take it all with a grain of salt.

  10. wayno, are you older than 10?

  11. From what I saw is that Bradshaw def. needs to be the #1 RB going into the season. Jacobs can spell him from time time and wear the defense down. With AB 1 and Jacobs 2, the running will be very very hard to stop. I mean how far would Jacobs have taken that dump off from Eli?

  12. Sorry if I smart here for a little bit Scott. After all the billionaire heirs could have paid for their own stadium if only 50,000 people joined me. The joke is on the PSL buyers but shouldve been on the billionaire heirs.

  13. And if any of u PSL buyers want to invest in my fund, guaranteed 10% return. It's a better investment then those PSL's, just check out the prospectus at waynomadoff.com

  15. Last year Jacobs looked great in preseason. I care more about what he's doing in week 4 and I think he'll get shown up by Bradshaw by then.

I like Ware's speed on that toss the other night, but I really want to see another game or two out of Brown.

  16. Yeah, Jacobs looked great in preseason and horrible in regular season. What is going to happen now that he looks just okay in preseason? He might look even more horrible in regular season, which I hope is not the case. Same gggmen, I care more about his status in week 4 regular season than week 2 preseason. There is no doubt that Ware has potential. He has flashed it a few times over the past 3 years, consistency, however, is not his friend. Let's all try to remember that Brown is coming off of an injury that usually spells the end of a RB's career. I am willing to give him a fair amount of time to get the feel for football back until I judge.

So, everyone, what is the over/under on Wayno's PSL posts between now and the regular season?

  17. Brown is coming off of a ruptured Achilles tendon. The fact that he's even able to come back and compete is amazing in itself. We should really tame our expectations for him this season. He will be limited to 3rd down duties in specific situations. Also, I'd like to add that whoever mentioned blocking as an issue for Brown must realize that blocking is an issue for all running backs coming out of college. Neither Jacobs nor Bradshaw saw any immediate time on the field because of the same issue.

  19. I agree with most that was said.

I don't think Ware is an NFL running back. And Bradshaw looked real good, but starting? Getting 250 carries in a season? That will be tough.

I'm not going to get on Brown. Yeah he was a terrible blocker, but like Haj said, all RBs out of college can't block because they never had to do it before. And keep in mind, this was Brown's first game in 18 months. I don't think it's fair to expect him to look all that sharp.

And it's tough to gauge the running game because: a) they played against (arguably) the best D in the league and b) half their O-line was taking the night off. After one game, it to soon too tell.

  20. Anyone grab some of the single game tickets? I was able to get 4 to the opener. It didn't seem like there were that many available. I'm psyched!!
