Surprise O'Hara

Yesterday, center Shaun O'Hara sat out because the ankle he injured during the offseason program unexpectedly swelled up. Today, he missed practice again and will undergo tests.

Meanwhile, WR Mario Manningham was slowed today by a sore groin, and TE Travis Beckum has a hamstring injury.

Just for kicks, tell me how you'd like to see Beckum used this year. Lots of divided opinion on what, exactly, he is -- tight end or H-back -- and whether he deserves more chances or not. As for me, I've always hated that H-back spot. It's a position that's neither here nor there, not quite a running back, not quite a tight end, and not used enough in general to make a lot of difference in the offense. I'd rather see the kid go as a pass-catching tight end myself.

  1. With the Giants lack of wr past wr1 and wr 3 and TE position without a viable pass catcher I would like to see Beckum get a chance to split out and catch some passes.

  2. If NY has kept Moss around this long, it would be ridiculous not to give Beckum another year. What has Moss done for the team going into his fifth season? 39 receptions! Beckum has eight in only one season, which puts him on a pace to almost match Moss' production. Cut Moss, give the kid another year. Beckum has potential to become something more, Moss doesn't.

  3. not enough balls to go around when your #1 WR has 100+ catches and #'s 2 and 3 have 50-60.

Beckum was a wasted pick, not a fit for TC offense at all. He's not physical enough to play as a FB or TE.

    Not a match...period.

  4. Well, my take is that the Giants selected Beckum as a direct counter to the offenses that include the likes of a Jason Witten, a Chris Cooley, and a Brent Celek. All of these TE's create havoc to the Giants defensively, and it would appear that they want to mirror that same sort of havoc. And now that they have that type of player, there seems to be some sort of confusion on how to use him.

Seems like a wasted pick to me. Nothing against Beckum, but the Giants simply do not creatively use the TE position. If he doesn't split out or serve as an H-Back then he will be buried deep on the roster.

  5. I think it is generally agreed that the Giants have an unimaginative offense. Any chance to use an unconventional TE like Beckum is remote. He's too much of a liability in his blocking to be used in 1 or 2 down so the only option is play him on obvious passing downs and split him out. Can he separate from a db in nickel or dime coverage? Who knows, we never get to see the kid play.

  7. Playing Beckum at WR could help with the running game, and the split screen game, as he would match up well in blocking corners and safeties.

  8. And just to add...if nothing else, I would love to see a 'Tall' goal line package that includes Boss, Beckum, Barden, and Pascoe (looks like he will make the team and has surprisingly pretty decent hands).

Such a package will allow the offense to either run or allow Eli to loft it up to one of these tall guys. Huh, then again, maybe I'm just oversimplifying how Beckum can be used.

  9. If he had ANY decent blocking skills, I'd say use him as an H-back out of the backfield against the Cowboys to fight off Ware (kinda like the Skins used to do to combat L.T.). So far it looks like he just gets blown over in blocking.

Appears we just have another slot receiver with this guy. He's just not going to block well enough anytime soon to be a TE and his receiving skills will land him as a 4th rec option.

  10. The problem with Beckum is his blocking. He needs to learn to block or he ends up telegraphing PASS every time he sets foot on the field.

  11. To Beckum's defense, blocking is not his strength nor is it the strength of a talent like Antonio Gates or Dallas Clark. Just like those guys, his strength is catching the ball. And the Giants must figure out a way to use his strength and create mismatches. The key is mismatches. This is what makes Clark and all those tweener type of TE's so effective.

  12. what makes Dallas Clark great is the offense that Tom Moore has created. Gilbride or TC, whoever has come up with the scheme, does not use the TE that much. Remember Gilbride made his name running the run and shoot with Houston and Warren Moon, no TEs.

  13. Yes agreed, but there has to be some tinkering with methodology. I mean, Spagnuolo brought over the Eagles defense in theory, but re-worked it to fit the strengths of the current roster. And to top it off, the guy made adjustments on the fly when things didn't work out as they prepared. This really shouldn't be too much to expect from coaches you hire to formulate strategies.

  14. Gilbride has been here awhile, he's been with Coughlin in Jville, where they were a pass first team with McCardell and Jimmy Smith. No TEs utilizaton in J'ville of note either

  15. The strength of Clark, Gates, Witten is that they are in fact good enough blockers to send out in the run game. When they are on the field, you're not tipping your hand. If Boss comes off and Beckum goes on, you are definitely giving something away unless Beckum improves his blocking abilities.

At the very least we have to be able to set him up in the slot and he should be able to hold ground against a nickel CB for an off tackle run.

Bottom line, is that if he can't block, he's not a true H-back and that's what we drafted.

  16. ggggg-men, your point about blocking is a valid point. At the same time, any TE that accumulates 80+ receptions and or close to 1000 yards is no blocking TE.

  17. Not saying they are a "blocking TE" persay. Those are 2nd TEs used in big sets. I'm saying that they are still skilled at blocking with an emphasis on their pass skills, whereas Beckum would lack blocking and only possess receiving skills.

A true TE should be 50/50. I'd call Clark, Gates, etc. 65/35, but Beckum appears to be 90/10 so far.

  18. ...I pulled my previous comment completely outta my ass.....let me know how I did. = )

  19. I think the main problem is Gilbride doesn't have enough creativity to figure out how to use all these weapons at his disposal. A good offensive coordinator would figure out a way to effectively use Beckum and Barden, for that matter. Not on every series obviously, but keep the defense guessing. I just have no confidence that Gilbride will figure out how to use all these pieces that Reese gets for him.
