Mara's Not Happy

Thanks to my guy Ralph V., here's a story on Giants co-owner John Mara and his displeasure about, well, everybody on this 8-8 season "that seemed more like 2-14" to him.

You'll note that Mara said Tom Coughlin and Jerry Reese would both be back next year. But the same can't be said for defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan, who Mara did not call out by name but certainly inferred when he said there would be changes.

  1. Mike Garafolo has a the transcript, or at least a very long version of the interview. Go Mara! He nailed it on the head.

This is the best thing I've read about this season's collapse. If the players, coaches or GM aren't going to get fired up over the embarrassment that was 09 then at least we have the Prez and CEO ready to make changes.

  2. "I'm less than 24 hours after the end of the season, so I'm sure I'll cool down at some point and try to make intelligent decisions going forward."

Ok. How can you make a very rational comment like that and, at the same time, say that the coach and GM are absolutely going to be back? You basically admitted to the entire NY press corp that you're too emotional to make an intelligent decision right now. So, by his own admission, his decision to keep Coughlin and Reese is not an "intelligent" one and he SHOULD take more time to think it over and gather all the facts. I'm sorry, Mr. Mara, you can't have it both ways. If you don't want to make rash decision in anger (good idea), don't tell ANYONE that they are definitely coming back (bad idea). Even if you are sure in your heart that Reese and Coughlin should be back, what would it hurt to have them sweat it out for a week or two? Both are under contract and can't go anywhere unless fired. A little fear of unemployment never hurt anyone who delivered a poor product.

  3. I think Mara spoke for every fan when he said this felt more like a 2-14 season than an 8-8 season.
