Sheridan Out

Somebody had to pay for the Giants' defensive demise this season. And, in probably the worst-kept, yet most short-lived secret of the year, defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan paid the immediate price.

The Giants fired him today, as announced in a one-line e-mail tonight.

Now the search starts. Dick Jauron, the fired Buffalo Bills head coach and former Jacksonville cohort of Tom Coughlin's, could be a logical candidate. So could another former Coughlin assistant, Don Capers, who is running the offense in Green Bay.

  1. This just in...

Ray Handley called Bill Sheridan and thanked him so his name will not be the only one taken in vain.

  2. So are the Giants limited to the unemployed in their search for a new DC or can they offer the job to anyone including those that are already employed by other teams?

  3. No Suprise. This unit had more than it's fair share of injuries, however the constant communication issues, the lack of leadership ultimately killed him. Oh ya, and giving up 10,000 points this year - that didn't help either.

Don Capers isn't coming here. Why would hel leave Green Bay? 80% plus chance its Jauron. Next year is big for TC and he will want guys around him he knows. How that plays out for the rest of the Giants Defensive coaches, I don't know. They have to all be really nervous right now.

I hope all the D players take a good long look in the mirror as well. This wasn't all Sheridan's fault and a man lost his job today and poor play by his unit contributed to that. No matter who the coach is, you have to understand your role in each play, you have to play hard and tackle. Let's hope this is the start of better things to come next year.

  5. Olivadotti and Hassel are two names being kicked around right now.

What I hope, I really hope is the Giants don't lose Gilbride to the Raiders. Two much change and in my opinion he did a pretty good job with that unit. I know a lot of people don't agree with that but it's mys stance. There are reports he is in line to be the head coach there. That would be a tough lose for Eli and the Giants.

  6. Can you inform me more on who Olivadotti and Hassel are.

Also, the Giants can offer the job to anyone. But if they are currently under contract then it must be a promotion for them. You can't hire a DC from another team who's under contract unless you make them an Assistan HC.

  7. Olivadotti is one of the Redskin's defensive coaches. Hassel is Jim Hassel, he was head coach of the Saints.

There are lots of names out there, Romeo Crennel (Browns former HC and a Parcell's guy) is one as well.

  8. Chris B I think you are thinking of Jim Haslett -- he used to be the head coach of the saints and then was a DC in St Louis last year -- we dont need anyone that sounds like Jim Fassel anywhere near this place right now

  9. Chris B - I doubt Gilbride will be in Oakland. And if he does go, he's an idiot and he's burying his career. First, you have to deal with crazy Al, who is the real coach. Second, you need to make things happen with JaMarcus as your franchise QB. Third, no player in his right mind wants to go to Oakland anymore. Combine all three and you're looking at an early termination and an abysmal coaching record. Gilbride will go there, fail, and won't work again in the NFL. I'm not a fan of the guy, but I don't believe he's stupid. Plus, Gilbride has seen what's happening with Spags. I'd bet money that Spags wishes he never took the Rams job. No talent across the roster, a great but aging RB that they won't trade, and the team will probably be sold and Spags may lose his job when the new owner tries to send a "message" about how things are going to change or brings in a new GM that wants his own coach. I'm sure Spags is kicking himself for not taking the Washington job. The Skins are a HOF team compared to the Rams. Sometimes the grass ain't greener...

  10. Capers is coaching the Packers offense?

  11. Preferrably, I rather we go after Greg Blanche with Redskins. He knows the NFC East and, despite what the Giants did to them in the second match-up, Redskins had a pretty solid defense. I believe they led the league in sacks.

  12. Isn't Blanche still under contract? If not I would either take him or Jauron. Although, Fat Albert's criticism of Blanche makes me a little leary.

  13. I would like to think that Spags wishes he would have stayed, gained more experience under TC and then took over once TC retired. I think Reese said it right and someone touched on it here, the Giants should not blow things up right now. They do need some consistency. I would not bring in a DC who will switch from 4-3 to a 3-4. That would mean new personnel and a total philosophy shift for already 4-3 guys. I think that would be a 2 year turnaround. I think we should trust TC will bring in the right guy for the job, knowing that his legacy and the rest of his career is riding on it.

  14. Does the Rooney Rule apply to coordinators or just head coaches?
    The list of candidates
Start with the guys who will be out of a job due to coaching changes:
Jauron is one, Jerry Gray and Gregg Blache (Redskins)and the recently fired intermim Bills coach Perry Fewell, who is an outstanding Def Coordinator is a Fourth. In comnig weeks I think Jack Del Rio will be looking for work. He's a good coordinator as well.

The other guys that you might have to pry away from their teams would be people like Keith Butler the Pittsburgh Steelers LB coach, Rod Marinelli from Chicago. These guys are all available for negotiations right now.

  15. If Gilbride goes, it will be an opportunity to recruit the next head coach for the team and give them the title of assistant head coach.

  16. Perry Fewell is an outstanding candidate. He'd bring some fire to this team.

  17. I guess, but you could do that with the D-coordinator position as well...start looking for the next head coach.

If Carolina fires John Fox next year, you think the Giants would be interested as a replacement for TC?

  18. be careful giants and don't wait too long. once the skins announce that they've hired Shanny (today), they'll be picking up the best available coordinators, especially Def which Shanny does not like to touch

  19. I think it is would be a good move to look at Blache as their defense kept them in a lot of games. I also would like to see Pepper Johnson get a look. He has coached linebackers, and D Line for the Patriots and knows a thing or two about Giant pride and tackling.

  20. I hate to see someone fired but this one was pretty unavoidable. Hopefully Sheridan will find another job soon. I'm sure the Giants gave him a good package to leave or his contracts includes a good package upon his being fired. I hope he'll do OK.

But like I said it was unavoidable. The Giants played horribely giving up more than 400 pts. Granted the offense did have their share of problems but, they did win their share of games. I don't recall the defense pulling out any game this year for the Giants. Like everyone said above there were injuries, but the defense just looked really out of sorts all season never merging into a cohesive unit. Weird schemes, people out of position, and really just no communication at all. And even if lack of talent played apart, the job of a coach is to smartly utilize and maxamize the talent at his or her disposal. That just wasn't done here.

  21. Bobby April - Special teams coach and a "differance" maker according to some is available from Buffalo. Good move for the Giants Ernie?
