Fewell In And Gone

Former Buffalo interim head coach Perry Fewell completed his interview for the Giants' vacant defensive coordinator's job this afternoon, according to a report by Vinny DiTrani of the Bergen Record.

Fewell is scheduled to interview for the Chicago Bears' DC job next week, and there's a good chance he'll land there because of his connections with Lovie Smith. He's a Cover-2 coach, anyway, and I don't think he'd fit into a team that needs a shot of aggressiveness in the coming season.

The Giants have apparently reached out to former assistant and former Browns head coach Romeo Crennel as another candidate. Crennel, the report said, is on vacation in Aruba, but is due back Monday. He'll no doubt be interviewed next week. The interesting thing about Crennel is he's a 3-4 coach, having been imbued with the Bill Parcells/Bill Belichick philosophy of defense that worked so well in New York and New England. He and Coughlin worked together on the 1990 Super Bowl squad, so it's not outlandish to think Coughlin would have him in for a sit-down.

  1. Not wanting to continue a discussion from a previous post, but looking into Crennel brings up the 3-4 as you suggest Ernie. I am not against switching to a 3-4, as long as it does not set us back 2 or 3 years. Right now, we do have some personnel for the 3-4 (i.e. Canty, Sintim) and some who could do well in the 3-4 (i.e. Tuck, Kiwi). I don't think at this point in his career, Osi would handle a switch and I don't want to lose the guy. My gut feeling is he will be back full strength next year from the knee. What worries me, is having a group of rookie defenders come in and expect them to start in a new system for this team. We would need minimum, a new NT, 3 new LBs, to go along with at least a good safety or two and 1 or 2 more CBs. That is basically an entire draft for defense. Who knows what the FA period will bring in terms of capped or uncapped. And FAs do not always pan out. Again, Crennel has shown success as a defensive coordinator and I have respect for the man. As someone else said in the previous post, this offense is ready now to compete for a Super Bowl, whoever is the OC and/or QB coach. We have the talent on O and I think Eli is now ready to push into perennial Pro Bowler territory. I just hope we can start keeping teams to 10 or 14 points, in order to give the offense a chance. I just hope whoever they bring in as DC will get this defense righted, whether it's by way of 4-3 or 3-4.

  2. If a move to a 3-4 is in our future we can use Osi in a trade to fill a need. Now that his coordinator and position coach are gone he is blaming Coughlin for his benching. Let's not go down the Shockey path of distraction here. If we can get value for him in terms of player that can work in a 3-4 let's do it. I do not think he is the same player physically or mentally since Strahan retired.

  3. Two things. Going to the 4-3 from the 3-4 makes little sense to me since we don't have the backers required. Our LB's are poor in the 4-3, how do we fill all those gaps? I know Ernie thinks we can make that leap but I don't, plus we don't have a dominate NT and I don't see Cofield in that position. Move on guys, this team is designed and has drafted for a 4-3 allignment for years! If we go down that route then next season will be long as well. I think it's fun to discuss but has very little chance of happening.

The other thing. Romeo Crennel is on the list. He is a big time name, in my opinion. I find Dick Jauron not being here a head scratcher, but its his career to manage.

  4. Ernie,

No firings today. Is TC done? Is so, will the new DC have to work with the coaches that stay? What's your take?

I'm not sure quite what to make of it. But keep this in mind. While all the searches and two firings have gone on, so too has the evaluation process and grading of players. You need people to do that. So perhaps one of two things is happening. Either Coughlin is keeping the assistants around to complete the paperwork, or he'll keep them and let the new coordinator pick and choose who he wants and who he doesn't. Either way, I wouldn't get comfortable if I was a Giants defensive or special teams assistant. Then again, I could be wrong. It's happened. Only once, but it happened.
