About The Draft

According to Frank Cooney of NFL Draft Scout and CBS Sports, this year's draft is not only going to be big, but fast.

Here's Cooney's piece that breaks down the times and distances of the top performers at this year's NFL scouting combine. In it, he notes that one of the favorites on this blog, Clemson running back C.J. Spiller, tied a combine record in the 20-yard dash. The mark was originally set by Tennessee's Chris Johnson, and we all know how explosive that guy is.

As for the big guys, six offensive tackles, five defensive tackles, and five defensive ends all showed first-round potential. So, for purposes of a Giants blog, there should be plenty of front-line options for them at No. 15 if they choose to go in that direction. Cooney said this could be the draft of the century so far.

I'm counting on all you drafniks out there to either agree or disagree. Are you guys psyched about the general depth and talent of this one?

  1. Not psyched cause the draft is weak at linebacker.

  2. I am still hoping that we end up trading for an experienced MLB. Maybe on draft day or just before. Now, I am not saying to give up the whole draft for one, but get a decent MLB for a 4th rounder. Just someone competitive to push a rookie or our incumbents during training camp. And, yes Wayno, this still leaves the option of Spiller at 15.

I am intrigued to see what JR does with the #15 pick. I cannot wait to see who he ends up picking or if he trades down.

  3. With the exception on MLB, there seems to be good depth almost everywhere. Just make sure to get a MLB early and the giants should be able to find some late round help.

  4. outside of McClain and Weatherspoon, theres no MLB worth taking at 15. however, i wouldn't mind picking up Sean Lee in the 2nd.

  5. CJ SPILLER MAY DROP TO 15!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That must be deep. U all want a MLB and we sure need defensive help but in two years when Spiller is on his way to HOF career you will either be saying what a genius Reese was or we needed a MLB that much???

  6. The way Eli gets KEvin Boss hit, we need to get big TE.

Not a lot of noise about MCCourty from Rutgers, seems like his times were pretty good.

Spiller or Best, they're both game breakers.

  7. why is everyone so low on Taylor Mays, is he a combine wonder but not a player? Seattle and Pete Carrol will have a chance at him. He should know whether he's the real deal or not.

  8. I think I'll blow a gasket if the Giants trade out of the 1st round.

  9. This draft is definitely deep in some areas, and actually rather weak in others. Besides MLB, there are not many NT's in this draft worth mentioning. And there are other areas that are somewhat skeptical because many of the players fail to distinguish themselves. So in other words, the type of player coveted in round 1 can be had in rounds 2 or 3.

This is why the Giants must be prudent in their draft process. There are only a handful of true 1st round players and a number of players with all very similar talent. There is no need to reach in this draft.

And BTW, Weatherspoon would be a definite reach at #15. If McClain is the guy that the Giants want, then they should go ahead and do whatever is necessary to attain him which would mean jumping in front of Denver. If not, again, the more prudent move would be to trade down and attain better value if no player warrants a selection with the #15th pick.

  10. I'm always pumped about the draft, which is why I'm so upset about the fact that the NFL is changing the dates and times of the draft. I happen to live on the West coast now which means I'll have to record the draft or miss it.

  11. I never got too worked up about the draft. Guys who are a "lock" turn out to be busts and guys that nobody ever heard of and go in the 5th round can become HOFs. Every team has selected real bums and real values, so it's not a situation where some teams have it figured out perfectly and some don't. It's an inexact science. Marino scored a 13 on the Wonderlic and was supposed to be "too stupid" to be great. Brady went in round 6. We all know what happened with Leaf, Mandarich, and, closer to home, Ron Dayne. It's a crap shoot and anyone who claims otherwise is either a liar, delusional, or has a six figure contract to talk during the draft like "he knows" for certain how it will all turn out. Even a player that seems destined for greatness can be ruined by the money. The only thing more ridiculous than claiming a kid is a "lock" or will go to the HOF before he has even played one down, is the way everyone grades each team's draft. The only way you can legitimately grade a draft is to go back and look at it again 3 to 4 years later.

  12. I agree, Dweez, real value can be had in the later rounds. Look at Bradshaw and what he did for our Super Bowl run as a 7th rounder. I think Nicks has the potential to be great and was a 1st rounder. Which these two examples, along with yours, show that the draft can be a crap shoot. Not every player is a lock such as Peyton and Eli, or Barry Sanders, but a lot of GMs hope for that first round HOFer and will stake their reputation and career on picking that potential lock, who they may know could end up a bust.

  13. We will trade Osi by or during draft day. He pouted last training camp and put up terrible numbers, he's pouting already this off season..show him the door.

  14. Once you get past the first 2 rounds, all the rest are complete guesses. Sure there are some first and second round busts, but i feel its better to procure 2,3 rd picks, and get rid off the rest..they're worthless, you do better signing undrafted FA

  15. To Anonymous 3:14 PM, the Giants are not trading Osi. I'd be surprised if they would consider trading any defensive lineman for the exception of Kiwanuka who would garner real trade value (a young veteran entering his prime years). His contract is soon to be up, and I'm sure the Giants are somewhat uncertain of what to do with him going forward.

  16. Anon, he put up crap numbers because he was coming off a huge injury. considering which, the 7 sacks he had are actually pretty decent. yeah, he was rubbish against the run; lets see how many other players come back the year after and play pro-bowl football after the injury he had.

Dweez and CE718, heres my issue; when peopel say "oh, hes a first round talent, but maybe not good enough to go in the top 10". WTF? if hes a good player, who cares if he goes 10, 20 or 30 overall?

  17. Spacey, I'm not bashing Osi. I'm just merely indicating that his value is not strong enough to merit a trade.

Also, Spacey, there is a pay-scale associated to the draft slot. You don't want to pay 15th pick money to a player worth 32nd. One good example is the drafting of Darrius Heyward-Bey by the Oakland Raiders. Here's a player who may be worthy of a 1st round selection, but clearly not the 7th pick of the draft.

  18. The NFL killed alot of the Draft excitement for me by moving it to Thursday. We used to make a party out of Draft Saturday.

  19. Offense is about average... a pretty weak QB class brings down the grade. But defense is absolutely stacked... maybe everywhere except MLB you have multiple players with first round talent on D.
