Looks like Brandon Spikes bombed out in the 40, living up to his speed-challenged rep. He reportedly clocked a 5.01, but I suspect that's just an estimation because a cloud covered the sundial as he approached the finish line.
Too cruel? Sorry. But such a time could, indeed, affect his draft standing. Could well drop him to second or even third-round status.
Florida cornerback Joe Haden did well, though, and the Giants appear interested in him. At least one report had him talking with a Giants scout as he warmed up for his 40, which he covered in 4.45 despite a rain-dampened track.

GREAT NEWS! With the 47th pick in the NFL draft, The New York Giants Select, Brandon Spikes, LB, University of Florida. He was a great college linebacker and will be a good pro. Just not HALL OF FAME like CJ Spiller.
ReplyDeleteexactly what i thought Wayno, better chance for us to cover two positions with a 2nd rd pick able to cover MLB if needed
ReplyDeletethat's a 3rd round time.
ReplyDeleteI wonder what his shuttle time was? Apparently that is more important than his 40 time.
ReplyDeletegiants should trade out of that pick and slide to the later part of the first round. can we talk about osi not showing up to workout?
ReplyDeleteWhat?!? 5.01 in the forty. O-linemen can run faster than that! Has Spikes been training since the season let out? For someone of his size and "athletic ability" he should have at least cracked a 4.80. Nice one Ernie about the sundial. The 40 measures straight line speed. In a cover 2, if that tight end gets behind him, he is toast! I absolutely say no to drafting Spikes!
ReplyDeleteScott, I am beginning to agree with you there. And, Osi didn't show?
sorry im assuming that he wont show, got a little ahead of myself
ReplyDeleteGotcha. I am very eager to find out if he does or does not.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone in the SEC actually use a TE? SPikes probably hasn't had to cover anyone in his entire college career.
ReplyDeleteSpiller is long gone by the 2nd round.
What about drafting a center this year? O'Hara aint going to be around forever
I wasn't a fan of Spikes last year when he was expected to come out, and I became even less of a fan this year. He's nothing spectacular, and those numbers reflect more of a 2nd day kind of player. All this talk about him being so athletic. Nothing athletic about a 5.0 forty.
ReplyDeleteBoth Coughlin and Reese were at McClains pro day, it's a safe bet that the Giants are going to do whatever it takes to go after this kid. Spikes will be a bust at the next level. Glad he posted poor numbers. Hopefully the Giants were turned off by that.
