Robbins Going

The Giants obviously had no designs on re-signing unrestricted defensive tackle Fred Robbins. But at least it looks like the guy will have a job. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting that he's on the verge of signing with the Rams.

Good for him. The 325-pound Robbins was a pretty good guy and a good player when healthy. He'll be reunited with the Giants' former defensive coordinator, Steve Spagnuolo, who wanted to get more size up front.

  1. Hey, I liked Robbins. He was very effective in his years with us (last year, not so much, but who was on D.).

    Unrestricted, so no pick.

  2. Sorry to see him go. When the big guys' knees wear out, it's a tough road back to where they were.

  3. possibly an indication that the rams go QB with no. 1? i know its a good move for both parties, but would the rams do it if they were planning on taking Suh?

  5. Whoops inadvertent click. I'm sure Spags will take Suh. He is a dominant DT who will force teams to change game plans.

  6. There are hae been a lot of rumours that if the Rams can't trade for a starting QB (they want McNabb), that they will draft a QB number one. I'm not sure how intelligent of a move that is given that is no "great" QB in this year's draft, but it is the Rams, so brilliant moves have not been their specialty as of late. Suh may drop to Tampa.

Ernie, if Suh falls all the way to four, what does Washington do? I'm thinking they trade the pick.

  7. See, my way of thinking goes the other way; they HAVE to take a QB. theyve gone with the safe d-line pick before and its not worked out. in the last few years theyve passed on Ryan, Sanchez, Flacco, Freeman. look at Atlanta, 2 years ago it was either Dorsey or Ryan. All the smart money was on Dorsey, all conventional thinking said Dorsey was the way to go, he was the safe pick, there were too many doubts about Ryan. 2 years on, Ryan has rejuvenated the Falcons and raised expectations for rookie QBs far beyond what they were a few years ago. Dorsey however has done very little.

Now, i'm not saying that taking Bradford or Clausen will immediately change the teams fortunes. all i'm saying is that if you want to win in this league you have to take a risk on a QB and if they don't trade for a QB, they have to take one in the draft.

  8. Spacey! - Atlanta had an O line when they got Ryan. The Rams have a shower curtain. If they go QB, he will get pounded. You have to give the guy a fighting chance to survive. Ask David Carr. The Rams are a mess with the ownership question still in flux. Until ownership is stabilized, they have no chance. Spags has an escape clause in his contract if ownership changes. He might be wise to use it before the glint of his work in the Giant's Super Bowl win fades with another abysmal season with the Rams. If they have rookie QB starting, I think they have an excellent chance to tie Detroit's 0-16 record.
